Safety Spring Stuck, Removal Help?

Post by jcox19 »

Hey everybody. Just picked up a P64 last week and I'm working on getting a few things squared away. First off, I took it apart to figure out why the safety was so gritty. Turns out the previous owner had ghetto rigged some sort of safety detente so it would work. Well now I've got the correct piece to get it fixed back up but I can't get the spring or his "invention" out of the safety spring hole.

The piece of metal+ spring are stuck pretty tight in the hole, and I can't for the life of me get it out. Since I'm a P64 noob I figured maybe somebody had some sort of advice.

It looks like the hole for the extractor and the hole for the safety spring line up, do they/are they connected? If so I could punch it out from the back, but I don't want to try that until I know for sure.

Thanks

Yeah, disassembly wasn't an issue. There is literally a piece of metal (previous owners fix) and the spring stuck down inside where the safety spring and detente would go.

Just a suggestion; put a few drops of Liquid Wrench penetrating oil (or similar) on the pin, put the slide in the freezer for an hour then slam it down briskly against a piece of wood laid down on a hard surface.

Good luck

That didn't work. This thing is really stuck in there and I'm not sure what else to try. There's no way to get the safety functional until I get it out.

Per this question; No, the do not connect. The are two separate holes that are machined in for there either side. The extractor hole is machine in at an angle, and the safety detent hole is machined in straight, almost parallel with the slide.

If the other suggestions don't work, here are two more;

1) What ever they bubba rigged, you might be able to unscrew. Try using a smaller drill bit, or something that will dig into and grab the metal. Try to see if it will unscrew out of the hole.

2) This one you will need to be really careful doing. Use a metal pin long enough to grip with vice grip pliers. Degrease the safety detent area, (use real care here) put a small dab on the tip of crazy glue on the tip of the pin, (again real care not to touch anything else here) fix the pin to the bubba rig needing to come out. Once it's dried and the pin is secured you can use the vice grip pliers to try to pull it out. You can also try to unscrew it here too.

If you run out of option, take it to a gunsmith. Of course shop around first.

Would it be possible to post a picture of the bubba "feature" in place?

I was actually going to. But I took it to a local gunsmith yesterday to have it taken care of. They had a good laugh about whatever the guy did. They're somewhat backed up but said it'll be like a 20 minute job once they get to it.
