FYI, Range Report on P-64

First, I'd like to say thankyou to the members here answering my questions both before buying the pistol and after. I asked about reliability, Point of Aim vs. Point of Impact, and an issue I had after replacing the mainspring which turned out to be a non-issue.

Second, the great videos by Saysonny are a blessing.

MY REPORT:

1.) I replaced the mainspring with an 18#. Double action pull is "slightly" better, but remains quite heavy. Single action is light, but was light before the change also. I didn't shoot much double action, and had to be careful not to experience an accidental double-tap when I did. As said, single action is delightful, however, since I will never carry this pistol with a cartridge in the chamber for safety reasons, and my 1st shot would be single action anyway after racking the slide, I am going to install the 19# spring and call it done.

2.) I completely disassembled the slide, cleaned, and lubricated. Again, videos by Saysonny are invaluable. Replaced the firing pin spring with new one from Wolff. Installed the 20# recoil spring, after flattening the ends as instructed on this board. (I also prepared the 22# spring)

3.) Also, ordered three magazines from SOG as suggested here. They are "the real deal", and all three functioned flawlessly.

4.) The pistol functioned great. It extracted the cases however a tremendous distance (I was 15' from a wall and the cases hit the middle of the wall), so I put in the 22# recoil spring. No real change in extraction, but at least I know I've done everything possible to prevent battering the frame. I fired 150 rounds so far of the steel case Tul-Ammo with total reliability. Recoil is a little "snappy" as reported here, but certainly not uncomfortable to shoot. After 150 rounds however, I did have a little soreness in the web of my hand. Also fired six rounds of Hornady XTP ammo and it also fed and cycled without problem.

5.) This is the best part. I did all my shooting at a measured 15 yards. First, the pistol absolutely does shoot to point of aim. That alone is wonderful. But second, THIS GUN IS ACCURATE!!!! Really accurate. Shooting from a bench, arms rested, two hand hold, I have a 12 shot group measuring 1 1/2" X 1 1/4". For a pistol this size, at 15 yards, that is amazing. All other groups (and rolling a few tin cans) was equally satisfying.


I do hope that the pistol will give years of trouble free service. I like the pistol because it isn't a Glock knock-off (I like the PPK look), it's all steel, and it offers double/single action with the exposed hammer. All other small carry semi-auto pistols I've seen are double action only.

So far I'm very happy with my purchase, and perhaps this report will help someone else with their decision. And again, thanks to this board for your help.

Nice range report Bill.

Are you aware that the safety blocks the firing pin so there should not be an issue carrying it with a round in the chamber.

You may not be able to have two hands available to rack the slide in a confrontation. If not then all you have is a rock when you get it out of the holster. When split seconds count I would rather be "good to go" then "almost good to go" just a thought.

I've shot golfballs at 15 yards pretty reliably with the P64. It's actually a lot of fun, and the balls can get launched 20+ yards.
