Another question about safeties!
OK, lots of discussion about broken safeties! People talk of safeties breaking while shooting. Do they actually break while shooting WITHOUT activating the safety, or is it using the safety between rounds? And if they break while OFF, is the gun still functional (except safety)? So much talk about them it's making me paranoid! Thanks for any replies!!

No matter whether the safety is or is not activated, the hammer will still contact it. Repeated dryfire with a weak safety will substantially worsen its life expectancy. It's just something you accept when you buy these older guns. It may or may not affect the function of the gun depending where the break is. Some folks continue to shoot the gun. However, be mindful that safety is really the only thing holding the firing pin in place. I wonder if a broken safety could become dislodged during recoil and allow the firing pin to come flying at your face!! Something to ponder.

Since where talking about safety's I wonder if anyone has compiled any data to see if there are any specific years of manufacture that are more prone to breakage than other years. Any know?

Not that I'm aware of. You could do a search on the forum for "P-64 broken safety" or similar search words and read the topics that show up. I think the folks typically tend to put the year info on there and you could see if any year was more prone to break.
