need help with mauser info

Post by volfandan »

Guys, I really want a Mauser as a shooter, but know nothing about them. I want to stay as cheap as possible, so I'd looked at the Yugo 24/47. The thing is...I really would like a turned down bolt. Should I buy one of these at $100 to $120, and then just buy a replacement turned down bolt body...or is there another economical Mauser out there that I'm missing? Also, are any of the mil-surp Mauser's made in carbine lengths....something along the lines of the MN-44 or MN-38?

Thanks

my brother has a Czech vz24 which is a really good mauser, he got it for cheap (the germans even equipped some divisions of their army with them.) outside from that I don't know much about other mausers (isn't the k98 considered a carbine by German standards?)

volfandan,

Price wise the 24/47 is a good rifle, and Norm will I am sure guide you through bending the bolt. Classic Arms has a Styer M95 with a straight pull bolt, they are really nice carbines but with a some kick for $99. I prefer the Yugo M48A, with the bent bolt, the trigger housing and floor plate are stamped instead of milled like the M48, other wise the exact same and usually in better condition and usually with mirrored barrels, however the last one I saw at a show here in KY the asking price was $195 OTD. But for around $200 to $250 you can get a real RC [Russian Capture]German Mauser with the bent bolt. Having said of that, the 24/47 is as cheap as your going to get a mauser type for. I have had a few of all the above mentioned rifles and I like em all but for a "shooter" I would go with the Yugo M48a, just my $0.02 worth.

thanks for all the info and encouragement, guys. I am definitely going to buy a Russian capture German K98....but it will be an unaltered safe-queen. I want a shooter, but REALLY want a bent bolt. I will probably pick up a Yugo 24/47 or a M48, refinish the stock, and maybe have it parkerized. I know that the original finish wasn't parked....but I think it would be pretty cool and unique. Heck, it'll be a shooter that looks darn good! I'll definitely let you guys know when I get one so you can walk me through the bolt bend.

BTW, Norm: nice mausers! I have a nice vice...will a regular propane torch do the trick? I may just send you the bolt, a nice Andrew Jackson, and a padded self-addressed return envelope! Just kidding.

Volfandan: SOG has a bunch of Mausers in their August catalog!

Steyr M95 for $84.95, K-98 for $179.95 (straight bolt) $199.95 to $299.99 (bent bolt) with special "rare codes and dates", 24/47 for $129.95.

I've heard nothing but great things about mausers but have no experience with them and just no desire right now.

Good luck in your search!

I've got a couple of great M48 and M48A Mausers, the M48A being shooter grade with a great bore and crown, the M48 being mint with matching numbers, bayonet with matching numbered frog and scabbard, two-bay brass oil can, cleaning rod and kit, muzzle guard and sight hood, complete. I'm going to put one or two pictures here to save band but give some new members or new surplus appreciaters a convenient reference:

There are several more images of these Mausers somewhere on this forum. This massive bolt and receiver design and the incredible steel and fit and finish on these handy little 8mm battle rifles made in the fifties in Serbia, (then a part of Yugoslavia; in a German-built factory on German tooling from German design, as I understand it)make this a real favorite of shooters. I'm surprised you can still find an M48. I don't think you will find excellent and above anywhere with out spending a few hundred dollars. Mines not for sale. The greatest ammo for these is that Romainian, especially the mid-seventies ('75, '76) and the Wolf Gold Performance 8mm Mauser SP. Both are very accurate out of my shooter. I'd get an M48 or M48A if in good shape, and an M47 straight bolt in a close second.

Hey Carguy ! I had an Argentine Mauser in 7.65x53 cal. And to this day, I still have no guns that can match the accuracy of the Mauser !! My first 2 shots ever with it were touching!!! With iron sights !!! I was Shocked !!! I instantly fell in love with it ! Unfortunately , i lent it to a "friend" to go shoot it and have yet to see it again. (that was 15 years ago). I am currently trying to get another by trading a shotgun for it. I will have another Mauser in my collection someday. No IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS! GET A MAUSER DOOOOOD !!! They are the real deal ! See ya Buddy, G

!st one I had was the Turkish, First, still have it and always will. it was and they still are dirt cheap. 2nd I liked the Arabic lettering and the crown on mind. BUT the first time I shot it it was amazing .I thought it was going to be all over but it grouped as if I was at ten yards instead of 75.
anyway waiting for Norm to show or tell us all about bending a bolt at home. would love to do the turk
