Cracked Grips

Post by snaggr »

Hey everyone. About a year and a half ago I picked up a set of replacement grips from Zee (hasn't answered my PM) and this past weekend when I was out bustin' a few caps, the left one cracked at the backstrap. :( Has anyone had this problem with other grips? Also, since Zee hasn't answered, does anyone know if superglue will work on the type of plastic he uses?

It seems to me like if you have a good, firm grip when you fire, the sharp recoil pivots the frame on the grip screw and puts the top of the grips under considerable stress -- frequently breaking them. Whether padding, like silicone sealant, can absorb the shock and/or make the grips fit so tightly to the frame that the grips move with the frame, I don't know.

Supergluing the grips back together is likely only a temporary fix.

Well, in addition to Zee's grips I put on a slip over Hogue grip with finger cutouts for a Walther PPK. That tightened it all up and brought the recoil under control very quickly. I just can't figure out why the grips cracked in the first place so that's why I'm asking the forum if anyone else had the same issue. On a side note, I tell everyone my P-64 is a 9mm magnum and they tell me I'm on crack...until I let them shoot it. Then it's a different story...lol! :D

I used a soldering iron th fix mine. First I made a little ditch "for lack of better word"then I used the iron to pull plastic around the ditch to fill it in. You might have to do a little sanding but it doesn't matter about looks because it's done on the back side. So far it has held pretty well.
