New recoil springs ...

Post by saands »

I figured that a title like that would get some attention. I got tired of waiting for Wolff ... Can someone give me an accurate measure of the outer diameter of their P64 barrel? I'm away from my P64 at the moment and need to make sure that the new recoil springs that I'm trying to get made will fit. If I got several measurements from several P64s that would even be better as we all know that these little guys were not all made the same!

TIA,

Saands, I posted two .503's and a .504 on the other thread.

Cool ... I'll call it 0.510" and go with that. If anyone finds one that is bigger than 0.510", please let me know.

Thanks,

Saands, I wonder if the tapering of the current spring from muzzle to the back should be a consideration. Properly installed, the back end is definitely tighter, and some folks have had problems when they swapped ends.

In your post above this one, did you mean bigger than .510 instead of the .501?

The tapered end should be on the chamber end of the barrel. If installed backwards, the tapered end may cause problems with the slide holding the spring in postion and could cause a jam. My opinion for the tapered end is to make sure the spring does not fall off when cleaning in the field and should not make any difference if you are making one. This is just an observation with other pistols having tapered end springs.

Abwehr.

Haven't looked inside the front end of the slide, but your comments reinforced the thought that there may be a reason for the larger diameter of the spring at the muzzle end.

Probably worth asking the spring maker. JMHO.

Yes ... I meant bigger than 0.510" ... I'll edit that next.

I will also inquire into the possibility of having them made tapered as that would clearly be a closer match. I do think that as long as the ends are closed, that they won't cause any problems if there is a little clearance. I was unable to get back to the manufacturer today, work got in the way, but I will try to talk to them tomorrow.

The tapered end of the spring gives upon recoil more
integrity to the whole spring as it compresses & further softens
the slide energy at the end of its path.

Well ... the first company that I called wasn't able to do what we need. It looks like I will need to enhance my model to predict stresses as well as the forces and energies of the designs I've been looking at. These guys wouldn't spec their springs to have the amount of deflection that we need in the P64. I'll keep you up to date.

No problem ... afterall ... it's not entirely altruistic. I want a real spring as much as any of us! ;)
