Temporary factory cover up and my first P64

I just got my first P64 a few weeks ago. I first noticed these pistols on You Tube and watched some of the videos and read some reviews. Being a fan of traditional style blued steel handguns and ones of European design in general, I was soon hooked! I also like its lines. That and the fact that I had yet to own a pistol in 9mm Makarov also helped. It was only a matter of time before I was bound to get one.

I got mine off a dealer at the local gun show. It came with the original holster and extra magazine (for a total of two) plus the cleaning rod. I had looked at some earlier in the year but one of the guns I tried had a hellacious DA trigger pull. It felt like it was well over 20 pounds being more in the range of like 28 if thats possible. I passed on that one but fast forward to more recently. This one was much better and was nothing like that other one I had tried. Its DA pull was a lot more reasonable and not bad at all considering things I'd read and heard.

I liked it a lot so ended up getting it. Overall it was in pretty nice shape with some of the normal holster wear. Not as bad as some others I have seen.

One thing I did notice was the gun seemed pretty "dry" even on the outside. I wiped it down with my Hoppes oil cloth and it was then that I noticed that it seemed like some of the bluing came off. The gun seemed in better shape when I first looked at it and before I wiped it down. Now more wear was evident. I wonder if they put some sort of thin temporary paste or something on it to cover up some of the wear? Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm not complaining, just pointing it out. Still overall for a military surplus gun it's in pretty nice shape. Mine was made in 1971. I gave it a good wiping down and now it looked better and not so dry if that makes sense. I also cleaned the barrel which was pretty good. to begin with. It was slightly dirty. When I was done though it looked like a mirror and was nice and bright.

I'll be curious to see if anyone else noticed the same thing when they went to wipe theirs down.

None of mine changed appearance upon cleaning/wiping. Seems odd. Wolff Gunsprings makes replacement springs for the P64 so someone may have done yours. The original DA trigger is, indeed, in the 28-30 # range. Weights in 17, 18, 19 and 20lbs. are available so normal humans can fire the gun DA!

Maybe someone put some cold blue on it.

Had to be a conceal job with cold blue. But still worth it I am sure!

Thanks guys. Like I said it wasn't terrible or major, just some spots here and there. But overall it's still in pretty good shape. Maybe I'll post some pics of it in the next few days. I have seen worse ones for sale. But definitely a cool handgun!
