Is my safety malfunctioning?

Post by Totenglocke »

I just picked up a P-64 (I already have a Bulgarian Makarov, used to have a P-83, and have a CZ-82) and I noticed something odd when using the safety. I can cock the hammer and put the safety on, but when I go to disengage the safety the hammer releases. Also, if the hammer is cocked and the safety is on, if I pull the trigger and let it snap back, the hammer releases. I'm not worried about accidental discharges because of the safety blocking the firing pin, but I'm wondering if this is normal or if my gun is defective.

Yes there is a malfunction here. It is either the safety, the disconnector or both that is malfunctioning. Take the slide off and look at the safety (while on safe) inside the slide see if you see any excessive wear. Then look at the disconnector. With the slide off, hammer back, push on the disconnector, the hammer should fall. With the slide on, if the hammer does not decock when you put it on safe I'd guess the disconnector is worn down. Disconnectors are still available from Poland on Gunbroker brand new, but may require some fitting for proper function.

Just checked, it's the disconnector. I pushed on it and it goes down, but the hammer stays cocked. Time to hit up gunbroker....

Here; On this thread there is a good pic of how the disconnector should sit in there.

Also try here for the disconnector. Shipping will probably be faster, and fitting won't be as much of a hassle:

So as the OP reports, this alone indicates a problem with his P-64 ?

It should not be possible to have the Hammer cocked and the Safety on at the same time. Once the hammer is cocked, placing the Safety on should drop the Hammer.

Are you not able to see the post he made where he identified that the disconnector is not working properly?

As stated in my original reply, the disconnector is the part that interacts with the safety to drop the hammer.
