A JAMMED P-64
A JAMMED P-64
Gentlemen, I have been a lurker on this web site for about 1 and 1/2 years now. I finally signed up yesterday after having trouble with my pistol. I hope you guys will help this newbie. I installed the 18 lb hammer spring and went to the range at my gun club to check things out. The gun worked flawlessly, the trigger pull went from awful to just super. My neighbor and I shot about 20 rounds and then the gun jammed open. He and I could not move the slide at all. I came home and removed the new hammer spring hoping that would help. It did not help at all. Some tiny metal shavings came out of the gun. I am hoping the are from the cartridge itself. I know I am being presumptuous on my first post to ask for some advice but I am. Should I just force the slide if I can or what? Any advice will be sincerally appreceated. Can I send this pistol to anyone that has worked on these guns? Hoping for some advice from you experts on the P-64. I have shot about 150 rounds thru this gun before this happened. Thank you guys in advance. Ernie.

Is the slide jammed all the way open?
Are you able to pull the trigger guard down to get the slide off?
What kind of ammo did you use?
Did it extract the empty shell? If so what did it look like, was it beat up?
Can you post a pic?

Curly1, Thank you for your reply, Yes the slide is jammed wide open, and I moved the trigger guard to the side and the slide still would not move. I used Russian Brown Bear ammo, I have used it many times in the past. I did not find the used cartridge. I wish I could post a pic but my computer skills are limited. I do not know what to try next. Ernie.

Curly1, I worked on my P-64 again, I moved the trigger guard to the side again, pushed on the slide again and the slide popped off. Everything in gun the seems O.K. I am going to reinstall the 18# hammer spring and see how everything works. This is a great gun and I carry it all the time so I am keeping my fingers crossed that the jam came from one bad cartridge. I also have a P-83 Polish 9x18 and it too is a great shooter. I hope I get lucky and every thing works as it should in my P-64. Ernie.

Do you use any lube or grease on the frame rails?
A little lube goes a long way to keep things working.

Yes I cleaned the gun super clean and lubed the rails with Hoppes gun grease.
Re: A JAMMED P-64
I too had problems with my slide getting stuck. It turned out my slide stop spring got dislodged and jammed between the stop lever and the frame. I had to gently pound on the rear of the tang with a rubber mallet to slowly work the slide free. I was relieved when I finally got it off without damaging the beautiful finish. After fixing the spring and lubing it up everything snapped into place.
Re: A JAMMED P-64
Did you square off the ends of the new recoil spring? The new springs are round wires while the originals where flattened on the ends. If you do this you will notice that the spring at the rear end will drop down just enough to stay free of the slide.
Re: A JAMMED P-64
Have any of you guys used the 20 lb. recoil springs I have seen advertised? Just curious why they would make a 20 when the factory one is an 18 lb. one?

They make the extra power recoil springs to take up some of the recoil so you don't feel it as much. The spring takes up more energy during cycling. I have a 20# and don't think it makes much difference over the stock 18# one, but I just leave it in the gun because it's already in it.
