Can anyone share some tips for smoothing out the slide on my 1971 P-64?
When I rack the slide manually it feels kind of gritty and doesn't always move all the way forward into battery (stops about 1/8" short). Tapping the back of the slide will seat the slide properly. Are there places on the rails, etc., that I should sand, grease, oil to smooth out the movement of the slide? Thanks for any advice.

Try some synthetic grease with a thin float of oil(synthetic too) on the rails and give that a shot. I think you'll like it alot.

You shouldn't have to modify you gun to make it work properly What do you clean and lube your pistol with? Is you recoil spring installed correctly? What type of ammo are you shooting? May sound stupid but is it 9x18mm Makarov ammo? I tell you I have seen and herd many stories of people not paying attention and loading the wrong ammo I herd one story recently where a guy tried to load a 9mm makarov round into s Springfield xd9 9mm lugger pistol and locked it up tight and damn near ruined his Springfield..

Give it a good cleaning. I have been using Gun Scrubber from Birchwood Casey. It is an aerosol
spray that blasts off dirt and grit. Then I use Break Free CLP for oil and a synthetic grease
called Super Lube on the rails and any other place that there is metal to metal contact with the slide
and the frame. Just a little dab works great. Don't over do it. I do this with all my semi auto pistols.
