Failure to go fully into battery

Post by elgoatropo »

Thought I would share a problem I corrected. My P64 has run pretty well, with an occasional failure to go fully into battery, which I had previously attributed to limpwristing.

But it yesterday it happened with me using a firm grip. I bumped the rear of the slide with my palm to no avail. I pried the extractor back with my fingernail, no dice. The brass case rim was binding on the sharp edge of the two little ears protruding from the breech face (the ones that strip the round off the mag and push it forward.)

These ears are new to me, as no other auto I have used has them. But I like the idea. Instead of the breech contacting the top of the case rim and tipping it down into the mag or the feed ramp, the ears apply the force to the rim on each side of the primer, facilitating reliable feeding.

Unfortunately, the sharp edge of the ears, combined with soft Western brass cases seems to create a bind. My solution was to chamfer the sharp top edge of each ear with a dremel tool, to allow the case rim to slide up and back into contact with the breech face as the slide goes into battery. The result was a much smoother feed, which won't bind even if the slide is eased forward.

I will update after I have a chance to shoot it.
