I love the SKS. Had a Norinco before I sold it to get money for my AK. I'm going to buy another sks or 2 in the future.
I hang out on sksboards.com a lot.

I have a Yugo 59/66 A1. Great gun, unfortunately it is hard to get out and shoot rifle. Need to find some new places to shoot. Went to a gun show in Denver yesterday. SKS prices seem to be decent again. If I had money I would have picked up a Russian model for $400.

I'm a small fan in comparison to some around here, I have had a few SKS's in my time, but today I down to three, a Russian '51 Tula, Yugo 59/66, and a Norinco, don't shoot the Russian, its a collector piece, the Yugo I have shot some, but I really enjoy shooting the Norinco.

I admit that I'm out of my league when it comes to the SKS,
is there one manufacturer that is more desirable than another or is it supply and demand that drives the prices?

Gunny, Some people are just STRANGE about all the bells and whistles they put on the SKS. But, I personnally like the SKS. It has a top eject, sort of, and I'm left handed. My two are well made, and I shopped around. I have a standard model and a paratrooper with a folding stock. They follow my personal value system, 'It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional and accurate'. They are battle rifles, not sniper rifles like you se some people trick them out to be. Putting a scope on what amount to a receiver cover is to me foolish. It will never hold zero, nor is the round designed for long range. Nor was the SKS designed for a 30 rnd. mag, all I use are 20's.. The only AK I've found I like is the AMD-65. It will be my next long gun purchase. It's short design and all metal furnature just feels like a natural pointer to me. But the Russians are the best made, and they are pricey $400.00 is about the going rate. The Albanian is the most rare I think. They are somewhat different in that the stocks are not interchangeable. The gas tube cover is different, it is larger, it has four slots vice three. The fixed mag is also different.

I bought a Norinco spike bayonet back in the late eighties at a gun show. They were in the crate and the dealer would hand you paper towels and you pulled out the one you wanted. Ammo was $60 a case I think the SKS was $89.
Some guy walked up and said those are junk! I said they seemed to work pretty damned good in Vietnam. He just turned and walked away. The dealer had a big smile on his face haha.
I still have the rifle to this day.
