P64 in 380?

Post by bpoling34 »

I recently bought a P64 imported by Tenn Gun. It's marked 9X18 (Makarov) on the slide but will not fully chamber a standard FMJ 9mm Mak (9X18) round by S&B or Wolf. The slide does not fully close against the barrel and back of the case by approximately 1mm. The bolt is fully closed against the back of the case, the cartridge case is fully seated against the front shoulder of the chamber, and the slide still sits back slightly. I measured the depth of the bolt face and the protrusion of the case from the back of the chamber and the 9X18 round is definitely too long.

My initial thought is that the barrel has been changed to accomodate the shorter-cased 9X17 (380) round. Has anyone ever heard of a 380 P64?

Strange....there aren't any P64's in .380acp that I know of. Can you post pictures of your gun? One with a chambered round and a few pics with the slide off might help us out.

Bpoling34,
First let me say welcome aboard and congratulations on your new purchase.
Is the pistol direct from the arsenal via the retailer, if so did you clean the pistol to get all of the storage oil out before you tried to rack the slide with a round in the mag? If the pistol is not completely cleaned of the factory oil that may very well be what is keeping the slide from going into battery. Try giving it a good cleaning then grease and oil it appropriately and see if it helps. If that doesn't work PM NORMSUTTON for the answer, Norm is the board Gun Smith guru and will be happy to give you the info you may need.

WELCOME

G.R is right 99% of the time the problems with a P-64 can be salved with a good cleaning. take the slide and the grips off , and soak in something like kerosene for a lest 12 hour's , do not soak the grips
then clean the gun up and oil it

bpoling34,
This is the second time in about 6 weeks that this has come up. The other gun, belonging to tjason, was returned to the dealer before the problem was resolved. Please advise of the fix if you would.
And welcome to the forum...it is the best out there.

bpoling34~ Welcome!
Firstl thing- Never fire Ammo in a gun that it is not chambered for.
Second- If unsure, Please take it to a qualified gunsmith who can make a definite measurement of your gun's Chamber, and give the proper designation of caliber.

Unless a barrel change was made with a .380 chamber ,as You mentioned, (no other calibers have been heard of that I know of,but there is always the possibilitity that an experimental caliber change was tried by "someone out there".) or was cut for a thicker rim on the cartridge cases. (again, none that I have heard of, This has been discussed in another topic here somewhere about a year ago, with the same assumptions.)
But, Ya Just Never Know.
Try "slugging" the bore with a kit. That will answer it . Good Luck ! G

Great Board..... Thanks all for your help. The gun (especially the barrel assembly) was thoroughly cleaned prior to testing and measuring.

More info about the gun:
The serial number starts with WG0
There's also an "11" in a circle and a date "1967" on the right side of the slide
The markings on the left side of the slide read "9mm" and the additional markings on the slide "X 18" and "Cal. Makarov" were obviously done by the importer using a dot matrix impact printer
There are no markings on the barrel

My company makes blank-firing barrels for MG34&MG42 and we're in the business of making firearms in general so I know something here isn't right with this chamber depth.

I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy some proper gauges.

Hey , It sounds like all the tools you'll need are waiting at work ! Kewl job you have !
Those are 2 of my favorite Machine guns from Germany. I hope someday someone will meet the right folks in Poland that has intimate knowlege of the early years of production on the P-64. Perhaps someone whom worked on the line making them and/or fine tuning, stamping, sales team, or just ANYONE that "was There" in the factory working. Only they can shed more light on that WGO marking, and other tidbits of info on it.
Hello, This one goes out to YOU, Mr. Polish Radom Factory P-64 assembly worker. Real Men of Genius!!
BTW, the Circled "11" is to designate Poland . Different # codes represent other ComBloc countries. Here is the "P-64 History , at least what we have of it ,So Far... G

i also saw a p64 that was clearly marked .380 on the barrel, im going back tomorrow to take another look at it. i decided to buy the 9mm because the guy behind the counter said it would take the 9mm luger round (which i now know to be incorrect)

Ern, this guy doesn't know the difference between 9x18MAK and 9x19??? I don't disbelieve you, but a .380 P-64 is a new one. Never heard of that before, but that doesn't mean anything. Welcome anyway Ern. Some one will pop-up with an answer soon.

Yup!! I'm a member in good standing of P.E.T.A. (People. Eating. Tasty. Animals). BTW did you set the guy straight about the difference between 9x18MAK and 9x19 luger??? You would think a guy selling weapons would know the difference, he could get somebody hurt.
I had something happen with a round called 9x18 ULTRA. It is NOT 9X18MAK. I was loading a magazine and noticed the ULTRA didn't look right. A good thing I did, the case did not look right. As it turns, the round would have chambered, the case measurements were way off and it would not have ejected. The case rim was very different. As it turned out the friend of mine who owns the gun store, knew the difference. One of his employees ordered the ammo, didn't even know it was on the shelf. The guy thought he was ordering 9x18 MAK.
I just knew it didn't LOOK RIGHT, so I asked the brain trust here (Norm Sutton) sure enough. The morale to the story is: 'Inspect before you buy'. Inspect then, inspect again.

Yeah, said he misunderstood my question and knew that it was an entirely different round.
BTW what ammo is best for practice, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, or Wolf, I've heard conflicting stories about all of them. I guess it depends on who you want to believe.

ern, I've used all of those you've mentioned at one time or another with different weapons. But I've had alot of misfires with Wolf. I've known people with weapons that simply could not use Wolf( Ruger mini 14's &30's of one) One thing for sure it is dirty. But, I've got Brown bear, Silver bear that are made by Barnaul, and Fiocchi, and Winchester in 9x18MAK. I don't know of any type of steel case that you can reload. Plus steel case is berdan primed, which I don't believe you can reload. Brass case 'Boxer primed ' can be reloaded. Even if you don't reload, you can save your brass and find someone who does, that's what I'm doing. Helps me count the pennies.

don't use wolf ammo in any gun, unless you want an expensive paper wait, there are no parts for these guns
