Looks like yours... from Classic Arms, right?...but someone wrote that they simply buffed and polished the slide to bare metal and were keeping it oiled up for protection from corrosion.

I thought the idea of bare metal not smart but it looked great! I guess as long as you keep it clean it will stay that way. ???

yeah, mine's from Classic. Wow, I guess if you kept it oiled really well it would be OK.....but bare metal on a gun makes me nervous as hell!

I was looking at "kits" where people build their own 1911's does anyone know after all the parts, how much would I be looking at if I were to build a mil spec 1911?

Trent

SARCO
used to have those kits the only thing lacking was the frame and a frame will cost you big bucks if you can find one

if you want do something like a 45 try one of these http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/WWII ... istol.html

or a CZ-52 from http://www.jgsales.com/featured_products.php

The Sarco kits were pretty cheap ... $100 maybe $150, I can't recall, but that was minus the frame AND the slide. My brother built a 1911 with one of them and the parts were some of the worst you could ever find ... worth $50 MAX for the kit. He ended up replacing most of them by the time he had a decent 1911. I'd suggest buying a Springfield Milspec used and refinishing THAT if you want a 1911 project. Probably end up being cheaper than the Sistema, even.

Trent... I built a kit 1911 and it is not worth the cost unfortunately. This Rock Island Armory is however a very good 1911. I have 2 1911's and the Rock Island is just as good quality wise as any other mil-specs I have personally seen. The parkerizing finish on this Rock Island beats any pistol I have seen at any cost, period... I haven't had any problems with this one at all. You cannot beat if for the price. I can get you a new one for $340 (last time I checked) minus the shipping of course.
Here is my photo of one.

You mean Fort Arnold at the Harlem Creek? Maybe by the time you got there Benedict Arnold had already committed treason so it may have been Fort Clinton by then. 8-)

Or are you refering to Port Clinton in Ohio...the Walleye Capital of the world?? :D

Or were you referencing Bill Clinton...you know good ole any port in a storm or my darkened oval office Clinton... ::)

Trent,

+1 with TTH and anjdrifter,

The Rock Island Armory .45 at under $400 is a great value for a mil spec and a decent shooter to boot. I picked up this RIA model MS, the Commander type with the 4" barrel at my local FFL dealer. I added the Trijicon night sights a set of laminated oak grips and was still under $400. It won't shoot a pattern as close as my Colt 70 series but for a plinker its great, gobbles up any FMJ which is all I shoot in it, I really like and for the money I don't think you can beat it.
