Can someone over 18, under 21, carry in car?
This is just a general handgun question, but a 19 year old friend of mine will be receiving a handgun for his birthday. Living in Florida, can he legally have it loaded in his car (holstered with thumb-break in glove-box). Of course, he doesn't have a Concealed Weapons License.
I thought I read somewhere that it was ok, but it might have been talking about long guns. But what about handguns? Thanks for the time.

You may have to dig a little to find the straight skinny on that narrow age group, but this is the place to start:

Florida, if I'm not mistaken, has a "safe journey" law in effect.
In Texas the personal automobile is considered an extension of the home, in general.

I believe so (limited knowledge of florida law, I know it's a bit more gunfriendly than Georgia and you can here, but it's worded wierd), packing is a good place to look, get hard copy info though, don't take ANYONE'S word for it.

Check with your local licensing authority. DON'T take anyone else's word on it. No one one this or probably any other board would intentionally steer you wrong but you and your friend have much more at stake. Check with the State and Local Police etc.
Be sure, be legal and be safe.

+1 with carguy & bzinzzz,
Check with your local police dept, sheriff dept, etc, each area is different even though it is a state law.
Florida:
Carrying without a Permit/License
Date updated: Aug 27, 2005 @ 1:36 pm

Nothing herein contained prohibits the carrying of a legal firearm other than a handgun anywhere in a private conveyance when such firearm is being carried for a lawful use. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to authorize the carrying of a concealed firearm or other weapon on the person. + another with the "check it out" consensus-- Here in Texas, the law just changed to presume that if you are in an automobile you are "travelling" and may therefore have a gun to hand--but the District and County Attorneys Ass'n has served notice that they won't change the way they do business, "presumptions" can be overturned

Add me to concurrence with previous posters. DO NOT ASSUME OR RELY ON OPINION. CHECK IT OUT WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT. Gun laws and interpretation of them vary from one jurisiction to another within the same state so do not expect the gun laws of the states that you may travel in to even resemble each other. Many law enforcement officers' opinions pertaining to gun laws vary considerably and courts do not always agree as to what behavior does or does not constitue "intent to go armed". I would not want to assume too much.

Islandson,
This guy writes a good book about Florida gun laws.
www.floridafirearmslaw.com
He is a lawyer in Orlando and he updates his book every year. It is simply and concisely written making it an easy to understand read. My firearms instructor gives his CCW students a copy of this book. It is a good source for info on firearms and self-defense issues in Florida.

I have read it twice. I am trying to make it habit to read it every so often. I did say it was an easy read.
