Here is a pic of my Radom Vanad P-83. This was the replacemnt for the P-64 It is made from stampings and weldments. It is lighter than the P-64. Mine is a "Special Eagle Edition" of 200.

How aboouty a few comparisons with that really cool P-83 and the "classic" P-64. It looks larger and sturdier. I'm surprised to read that it is lighter than the P-64 is it alloy like the PA-63? Is it 9x18? Is the recoil more managable than the P-64? How much? How available? Who makes it?

I like my P83, but honestly, it is not as solidly made as a P64. It is made from stamped folded, welded sheet metal. The forward portion of the frame under the slide shows weld marks on the inside. However, the exterior of my P83 has an awesome shimming blued finish. I have the stampings on the slide like the limited eagle edition, but mine is regular military issue other than that. I think that the hammer was designed for folks to pull it back since they were very used to not firing in DA, only SA.

It is reliable and smooth operating, but these are not imported into the US anymore. Dalvar was the last importer from what I heard. The pistol is slightly larger than my P64, but has improved features like normal DA, smooth SA, improved, simple mag release, better sites, slide lock, and more comfortable grips.

I got mine from a web vendor who has retired, but he only had one. Dalvar doesn't have any more from what Tad said.

Dalvar is still around and trying to import pistols still. Last I spoke with Tad, he sold me 2 mags for my P83 and a recoil spring. He was trying to import Polish Toks.

My P83 shoots straight and great. Recoil is much better. Tad said the new Radom factory is different than the old large one. It is a small operation.

I was hoping that the Poles would put their old P83's on the market as they shifted to 9mm luger chambered pistols. It hasn't happened yet.

They are hard plastic grips. I read somewhere that someone wanted to mod them for a P64 but I don't see how. I don't see where you'd get them either....

Tad of Dalvar said he was about out of P83 parts last I wrote with him.

You can check with Bartos, but as far as I know, they stil issue these to the Polish troops in Afghanistan.

I have two brand new, never fired (except one I fired for the article) consecutively numbered from Tad - very first 200 he imported and I wrote a comparison with the Makarov article published in the American Handgunner magazine in October/November 1995 issue.

If someone really, really wants one, I suppose I can be persuaded to sell. Excellent pistol

Yeah, that would be interesting reading.

Too bad about the grips. Plastic or resin or wood, for that matter, is OK, but I wish someone would make hard rubber grips for the P-64. Maybe it'll get popular enough for someone to do it.

Thanks for the info. I had always wondered what the Poles went to after the P-64 had been discontinued, and now I know. The replacement of the P-64 carries on in a good tradition, it appears.

Hi,
P-83 is still a main handgun in Polish army.
Although in airborne forces, where I serve, we don't use them since about 8 years.
Polish troops use it in Iraq but in Afghanistan we use P-94 WIST
In my opinion nowadays mak ammo is to week in army use.
Unfortunately our supervisors choose P-94 pistol.
If I would go on a war I would chose P-83 cause I have more trust to it.

Glad to have you as a member and thanks for sharing the Vanad. I almost bought these from you awhile back. I wish I had now. They are really scarce.
