I'm not at all sure when it happened, but the retaining pin for my trigger guard came apart. One side of it is still in there, so I'd thought it was two rivets. Lo and behold, I go searching for a replacement, I come to find out it's supposed to be one whole little bar. How does a piece like this snap? I'm not -that- rough.

The Trigger Guard Pin is a single pin. Should be easy enough to find it on Gunbroker or eBay.

The front portion of the Trigger Guard acts as a Slide Stop. That is why you have to pull the Trigger Guard down to remove the Slide. Under normal operation the Recoil Spring keeps the Slide Stop portion from getting hit to hard. However if it is causing damage, the Recoil Spring could be getting worn out, or your ammo is to hot for it.

I'd replace both the Trigger Guard Pin and Recoil Spring. With the Recoil Spring at stock specs or going stronger. Also make sure you flatten the Recoil Spring ends.

The recoil spring is just about a year old, a 22lb spring from Wolff (with ends ground flat). Ammo is standard Brown Bear. I'm guessing the pin is just worn. Although unlikely, I wonder if this has anything to do with the other issue I have of multiple FTF's, which I'd previously believed to be just worn mag springs (I had a new mag on the way when this happened, so I haven't been able to test it yet).

I won a Gunbroker auction for a pin, just waiting on the guy to get back to me.

Question now is, how do I replace it? Just pop it through the hole?

Check out this thread that tells how to get the pin out. I would think it would be the same to install.

Hmmm, looks like something I might not be able to do at home. I haven't got a vise, for one. (I'm as pure as the driven snow! Hah!)

You don't need a vice. Just find a sturdy metal rod. Rap some shielded electrical cord around the Trigger guard, then use the rod to twist it tight, the way you'd tighten a tourniquet. Put the new pin in and unwind the cord.

Before I try to do something stupid, thought I'd better ask first: Since half the pin is still in the guard and basically holding the thing in place somehow, can I just pop the new pin in at the same time as popping the half of the old one out? Or are these things too fragile for that?

You'd probably want to use one of the methods to compress the Trigger Guard to ensure the new one goes in straight.

Yeah, better safe than out $250.
