Loaded mine up for the first time, and after I put the first cartridge in the magazine, I looked at the side of it and thought "surely it holds more than six". Indeed, after fully loading it to the capacity indicated, there's still some spring clearly visible below the follower. I could probably stuff one more round in there, but every source I've looked at says "six", so I won't.

Is that just the way these older springs are?

You could always chamber one and thus have 6+1.
