I prefer ball ammo because the p64 was designed for it; also you get deeper penetration with ball ammo.

It depends on what feeds well. My P-64 doesn't feed Hornaday (won't even chamber). I use Pow'r Ball or FMJ. A good FMJ like S&B, Winchester or Fio. will definitely get the job done. I think you should experiment and see what will actually feed reliably.

I've been carrying FMJ but think I'm going to go with the SilverBear JHP's. I tested some in wetpack and it seems to out-penetrate the hornady xtp's and is much cheaper and more easily available.
Check out a couple videos I made here

Do you P64 owners think this stuff will be ok to fire in a P64?-

IMO
its too much for a P-64 and FEG guns ,it shows only the
1014 fps -- East German Makarov, 4 inch barrel
1057 fps -- CZ 82, 4 inch barrel
but its you gun,

I think that since there aren't any spare I would agree with Norm that it might be risky. The P-64 is small it would at least be pretty hard on your hand and no doubt shorten the life of your gun.

Norm seems to know what hes talking about-I'll keep the 'heavy' stuff for the CZ82.......

I just ordered a p64 from SOG so I too was wondering which you guys would recommend. As was mentioned, I'll probably play around with some different brands to see what mine likes.

I've settled on ball for my P-64s. I do use Hornady in my Maks and Silver Bear JHP in my CZ-82. However, I believe the shorter barrel of the P-64 drops the velocity too much for reliable expansion of hollow points. I could be wrong, but I feel more confident with the FMJ round.
Just my opinion....

For the time being, lead cast (4 gr unique).
May switch to silver bear hp tho when I get some. Problem is, if HP doesn't expand, you'll get fmj like penetration, if it does you'll get less penetration, but the expansion.
I am considering staggering them....

I read about not using the p-64 with some of the hotter ammo on here, and other places, so I shot an email over to Buffalo Bore and asked them about using the 115 gr load out now in the gun, and also when the +p jhp will be available.
They responded with this:
"I see no reason why you cannot us it in your P-64 as a lot of other
customers do.
Whenever the bullets arrive, which was supposed to be in May 2010, we will
make the ammo, but that is all I know."
They say there should be no problem with the heavier load in the p-64.

The only problem here is that there are no, 0, none, zip, nada, Nolla, zed,
صفر, Нула, 零, cero factory spare parts available. If they're wrong, you are out 1 nice carry gun.
