Problems with JHP feeding?
Problems with JHP feeding?
I have seen some P-64s that will eat anything from the standard FMJ rounds to the 115gr Silver Bear JHP ... and yet there are others that won't eat ANYTHING with a hollow point. I finally got the opportunity to examine one of each side by side and it appeared that the fussy eater had a shorter ramp leading to the chamber. I removed the slide stop/ejector (watch that little spring ... it will fly QUITE a ways ... or bounce off multiple walls when it comes out ). Then, with better access to the ramp, I took a light dremel cut to the base of the ramp ... rounding it off slightly and in the process removing the ridge that was catching the JHP bullet tips. 45 minutes of careful reshaping, polishing, and cleaning later and all the fussyness was gone ;D ;D ;D ;D

saands,
Excellent information! I always felt it was in the feed ramp, but never checked it out as all mine eat anything I put into them. I am sure that under Communist rule, the workers had not real incentive to put extra time into them and as long as the FMJ rounds worked, they were fine.
Again, Thanks for the information

Problems with JHP feeding?
so far my 72 will eat anything and spit it out just fine. but have not fired a lot of hollow pt. stuff thru. my question if you only had one choice and had six rounds and your shot was life or dead, which would it be. please keep it simple for me I am not the sharpest spoon in the knife drawer..al

JHP in the chamber and the rest FMJ. That way if the first don't do it, the rest will, as I know they feed good.

Excellent suggestion grayfox! I think I may just adopt that practice with my P64.JHP in the chamber and the rest FMJ. That way if the first don't do it, the rest will, as I know they feed good.
My bedside Glocks stay loaded with talon, +p, talon, +p, ...ect. I figure the first one cuts the hole and the second one knocks em down.
Had anyone seem or performed any expansion testing on the 9X18 JHP rounds? I've heard and read that anything less than a 9mm fails to expand reliably. Well, what about a baby 9? Is it even worth the trouble???
I just received my first order of SilverBear 94 gr JHP's last week and am about to go try a few out. I was curious about the feeding problems that you guys have mentioned. Maybe I'll try a few mixed magazines with alternating rounds while I'm at it.

Right Anj, that is the crux of the matter, isn't it? My answer to myself when I ask this question is what I am trying to accomplish when I pull the trigger; stop the attacker. (Stop here for simplicity! ;D)so far my 72 will eat anything and spit it out just fine. but have not fired a lot of hollow pt. stuff thru. my question if you only had one choice and had six rounds and your shot was life or dead, which would it be. please keep it simple for me I am not the sharpest spoon in the knife drawer..al
I find myself slipping that mag of Silver Bear 115gr HPs in when I actually put a P-64 in my pocket and go out into the world of the unknown.
A note to everybody else: I've fired it repeatedly in MY P-64s with no damage whatsoever. However, I do not recommend it for high-volume range practice or plinking.
I like the ballistics on the CorBon PowRBall, also. It's designed to dump everything (energywise) into flesh and bone with high speed and quick expansion. In my opinion that feature makes it more capable of stopping the aggressor. The 115gr Silver Bear is heavy and fast enough to perform comparably.
I think the Sil Br 94gr HP is a close second, and certainly it is more suitable mechanically for the P-64. Since the PowRBall is so expensive, and since you can't get the Sil Br 115gr on the market anymore, I would carry it if I were to lose my little supply of the 115.

Problems with JHP feeding?
My '76 sometimes will not feed a hollow point on the very last round. That just might solve my problem. Thanks for the good info saands!

I have a 76, Mine will eat anything I feed it.
what I have been doing is; the mag in the gun is all HP while my spare is all FMJ. My theory on the matter is, If the target hasn't gone down with 7 HP's then the target is wearing armor/i'm a really bad shot, and even though the 9x18 FMJ is not armor piercing I still have a better chance of doing so.
