I think you guys are closer than you think--Sure, cops, especially Hiway Patrol, pay attention to traffic infractions--in the HP's case, that is their primary function--but how many times has a "real" offender been caught as a result of a traffic stop?? I got no problem with that.. BTW, that reminds me of another one of my own experiences with a stop-- a Texas highway patrol officer stopped me for an expired sticker--and then it turned out that the insurance card I was carrying was also expired--but all the sudden, just when I was trying to guess the damages--she looked down the road, back in the direction I had come from, and said rather shortly, "Well, I'm just going to warn you this time," and went back to her car. I can't help but think they were looking for something besides a traffic violator just then...

Thanks himmel for your diplomacy. My apologies to the forum for my sarcastic tone. Of course, the answer to himmel's question is "Many, many times!"

As for me, no apologies are necessary. It is very refreshing to me to hear anyone voicing an opinion that shows respect and consideration for our police or military. They are, of course, like you and I, less than perfect. Thank God they choose to serve and protect us! It must be the great pay and public appreciation that they receive!

thanks for all the positive statements.. it was for our giant pension payments , but in reality it was worth every minute because most leo s all have a moment or two when it was all worth it..your statements might be one of them.

Speaking of "traffic stops" I read somewhere on the internet (can't remember where now) that if you get stopped, and the officer wants to search your car, don't let them! This holds true even if you have nothing to hide. The guy that posted this info said he was a lawyer, but you can't beleive everything you read. The post made a lot of sense. The "jest" of the reason was to make sure your rights were not violated, and if they want to search your car, they have to get a warrant. This would totally protect you in case yu had a firearm in the car and it was legal to carry in your vehicle as prescribed by the local laws.
I posted that on HK94. I was an LEO for 22 years and a Chief for 71/2. The point I was trying to make is that you do not ever have to let anyone search your vehicle. If its a stop for a traffic infraction, they can only hold you for appr 1/2 hour. If they say they will get a warrant, thats BS, it takes 2 to 4 hrs to get one. I just don't want this great country to become a police state. Too many people are in jail just because they don't know he law. I have had rookies stop me before (I didn't tell them I was ex LEO), and when I refused to let them search, they get all red and want to know what I have to hide....nothing, I just don't give up my rights that easy.

I agree. I haven't done anything wrong. If you want to search my car you are fishing. Fish in someone else's pond.
I used to get pulled over a LOT. Broke student driving a POS that was once described as "impersonating a motor vehicle".
No one ever asked to search, but then I was polite, and kept my hands in sight at all times.
