Yes I would put the $250 into an M39 also before going with a Russian refurb.

They are excellent shooters and the 2 stage trigger pull is the envy of all milsurps.

I'm just worried about the cracked stock option.

Here are some photos Classsic posted on the damaged ones for -$100 option. It says in the article that there are only a few rusted ones and are mostly cracked stocks for that option.

Everything I see there rust wise is very minor and easily removed. And there are spare stocks out there if yours is not shootable but there are no more M-39's.

Well I was too late on the draw for the discount, the cracked stock/rust option for both Sako and VKT are all sold out. But...you guys talked me into it so I splurged and got the standard grade Sako M39. You guys better be right about this...just kidding

I will let you know how it is when it arrives.

We eagerly await your report. And pictures too. Can't wait to hear what you think. I have never heard anyone NOT like the M-39 that liked WWII milsurps.

I picked it up from my local FFL today and I'm happy with it. Feels kinda heavy compared to other bolt action rifles of the period but the balance is good. No cracks just a few dings but honestly it looks pretty decent. I have to clean up the cosmoline off it though. It came with a surplus sling attached.

I will add pictures later.

A guy over on the gun boards is selling a new book he wrote on the war time Mosins.

Ships out of Ukraine and only 500 copies were printed.

I ordered a copy myself.

Anyone interested can get the info here:

Looks damn nice BigBake. Looks like you did good. Who made it? Sako or one of the other 2.
And I would treat that ammo as corrosive.very easy to clean nothing very difficult but you MUST do it right after shooting it! With Michigan's high humidity the corrosive salts from the primers will suck moisture from the air and make rust on your pretty m-39 overnight. Just wipe all parts that might come in contact with combustion gas / residue with Windex real good, (including the bore and inside the bolt) and then clean as normal. Go to "7.62x54r.net", they havr a great video on bolt stripping and reassembly. But don'e be afraid to shoot it I shoot corrosive ammo all the time with no problems, just gotta clrean it as soon as you can.
Nice purchase man.

Thanks I'm happy with it and will probably not buy anymore firearms at least for a few months or so. I've got plenty of ammo to shoot it now for the summer to go along with my other guns.

Thanks for the advice, I figured they were corrosive. I will just have to give it a good cleaning after.

Its a Sako.

A Sako, cool. I believe they were thought of as the best of the standard service issue barrels but I could be wrong.
And advise is what we do here, make sure that those who need the information get it.
