Eat Wheaties ?
Sorry I had to ....
If this is you first pistol that breaks down like this it takes time and a kinda learning curve I found ..... Yes the heavier spring will be more difficult to break down ......
I pull mine apart in about 5 seconds now and I'm not in a hurry ..... Just rushed ..... Slow is Fast in a LOT of things in life

Re: Slide
The spring may not be ground flat on the end like the original, compare them.
My 22lb spring isn't ground flat and yes it is a little difficult to get back on but I use my shooting glove to get a good grip on it.

Re: Slide
I have a new to me, 1975 P64. It is a beauty. But, the double action trigger pull required two fingers. Without having fired the P64 I have read all the great posts on recoil and hammer spring issues. So, I ordered and installed the recoil and hammer kits and chose the 18 lb hammer spring and the 18 lb recoil springs. (Interesting learning curve there) I also ordered and installed the blued magazine release device made by Matt Z. Great release and it works just fine. But wait...there's more!
After having installed the new 18 lb recoil slide spring without filing off the ends of the spring I had a duhhhh moment. BIG MISTAKE! Now I cannot remove the slide.
I have eaten my Wheaties etc. and I sure do want to remove the slide and flatten the spring ends to prevent this again. At the moment I have still not been able to remove the slide.
Any thoughts?

Re: Slide
ED,
Have you tried to remove it after firing?
Try using snug fitting leather gloves to get a good grip on it and crank it back as had and fast as you can and lift up on it as soon as it is racked back in the same motion.
I also use a thin strip of wood to hold the trigger guard down so I dont have to deal with holding that off to the side.

Use a 2x4.EGL wrote:After having installed the new 18 lb recoil slide spring without filing off the ends of the spring I had a duhhhh moment. BIG MISTAKE! Now I cannot remove the slide.

Put the 2x4 on the ground. Grasp the pistol in a standard pistol-grip. Place the top of the slide, just above the muzzle, against the 2x4. Push down. When the slide has moved as far back as it can go, while maintaining pressure on the gun, grasp the back of the slide and pull up and away relative to the gun.

Re: Slide
High Curly1 and thanks for the quick response. I have not fired the gun yet. I'm anxious to do so. That will help as you suggested I'm sure. I have used my gloves too. They help a lot since during this whole process I nicked the end of my dominant hand thumb and it is giving me fits. Also good idea on the wood chip to keep the trigger guard from closing. That has happened several times during this struggle. I will continue to use all of these ideas as I learn more about how to use and maintain this great hand gun.
Again thanks for the great ideas.
You folks are great.

Re: Slide
I have used the 2 X 4 method with gloves and it worked like magic. I just wasn't strong enough or coordinated enough to do it without an assist. Thanks guys for the help. The P64 slide mounts and dismounts real slick. Papa like! This completes another step on all of my prepper activities.
Just got my ALICE ruck sack and frame today and sorting through how to arrange all of my bug out gear for me and my wife. That is a topic for another thread.
Best regards to everyone and the good advice.
