Finally picked it up!

Post by Moid62 »

I finally picked up my first P64 from Gander Mountain. I made the last layaway payment, filed the necessary paperwork and brought it home. When the sales guy brought it out from the back room he said since this was their last one and there was a loose magazine floating around, he put it in the box for me too. So, I got the pistol, the cleaning tool and three magazines.

I find that the DA trigger pull is not too bad; it’s smoother and lighter than my Nagant revolver (but what isn’t). After wiping it down, I found that the finish is better than I thought. The safety selector is stiffer than I’d like but I haven’t decided how to deal with that, filing the plunger vs. cutting the spring.

I have a few questions.

I noticed that the third mag is of the early short lipped variety; will this cause an issue in a newer (1973) pistol?

Is there a source for safety detent springs so I can experiment with messing up the original?

Does anyone have any idea how the cleaning tool was intended to be used? I know the slot is for holding a patch. The point on the tip looks kind of like a bore jag but it lacks the diameter. One side of the T handle looks like it’s supposed to be a screwdriver or maybe a prying tool? Just curious.

Nice catch.Good condition and good deal with the extra mag too. I am not 100% sure about the bore jag,but I know that one side is a screw driver. I never use it though,I prefer the cleaning rod that came with my Nagant revolver. Out of curiosity did you pick it up at the Gander Mountain in Spring TX? When I got mine 2 weeks ago they said they had two left with one on lay-away. Be prepared for startling accuracy, mine from a rest can put all 7 rounds in the 5 ring at 50 feet. As for the magazine I don't know about it causing problems, but it should be a quick 2 minute fix with a dremel,I had to do the same with a 1911 mag, just disassemble it first.

Great find with 3 mags. The mags at a LGS are $25.

Nope, Lansing MI. They were down to one when I put it on layway which is one of the reasons I did it. Probably just paranoia but I had sense they were drying up when both Aim and J&G sold out and I haven't convinced myself to get an 03 FFL yet, I should do that next so I take advantage the next great bargain online.

Supposedly the tip of the cleaning tool can be used as a punch to start the removal of some of the pins in the frame. Part of the handle is a screwdriver as you thought. Not sure if I'd use it to pry with, but it may help with the extractor removal, haven't tried it, but I do use a flat blade screwdriver for removing the extractor. Only place for springs is usually gunbroker from a feller in Poland and sometimes a feller in the US but he charges a lot more than the guy in Poland.
