FEG SMC 918

Post by irishbob979 »

Just lucked out and won the auction for a SMC 918 on Gunbroker. Nobody bid but me. Gun with 2 mags, original box and papers. Should get it in 4-5 days. I'll keep you posted.

I saw that, I'm envious, I wanted a SMC 918 but a SMC 380 came up.

I only own 1 380 - a Ruger LCP - it's my summer carry. In the fall I'll switch back to my P-64. Out of all the 9x18 handguns I own, my favorite is the P-64 - fits my hand, shoots great and packs a punch.

I think you'll find the SMC's recoil to be snappy.

I'll post pictures when I receive the gun. An old man in flip flops is walking it here from California (U.S. Postal Service). :P

I've got the R61, the military version of the SMC-918. It's a great gun! :D

Just got an update from the World's Greatest Postal Service - the "package" was picked up on the 11th and actually processed through their facility on the 15th. I hope they packed this gun in cosmoline 'cause at this rate it'll be a rusted clump by the time it gets here. Okay - I'm venting.

The good news: the aluminum and plastic won't rust. :P

Knowing my luck a rare aluminum oxidizer will infest it with a by-product that eats plastic.

If you look at the side-by-side pic at the URL below you'll notice that the trigger is further to the back of the trigger guard on the P-64 than on the FEG. With a shorter trigger travel the P-64 must have a heavier trigger pull to deliver the same amount of energy to the hammer in double-action (trigger cocking) mode. Like chocking up on the handle of an automobile jack. If you grip the jack handle 2/3rds of the way back instead of at the end the jack handle stroke (trigger travel) will be shorter but the effort will be greater for each jack stroke in order to jack up your vehicle.

The aluminum frame FEGs are lighter than the steel framed P-64 naturally. Size is virtually identical. FEG has button style mag release, although it is in an oddly high position. FEG parts and mags are available. FEG grips are conventional two panel type not subject to cracking. The small (6 round) FEGs are very hard to find and six round mags are virtually unavailable, although seven round PA-63 mags will work. If you have an aluminum framed FEG you can probably remove and replace the barrel with a rubber mallet as I did.
