Trigger malfunction

Post by ogdengunner »

>:(Hello everyone. Just joined and have a question. I acquired a P64 today in good condition and have test fired it. After I field stripped and cleaned the gun, I hit a major snag. After replacing the slide, I find that the trigger mechanism no longer functions correctly. I can put the gun on its side and the trigger guide will eventually engage but if I try to use it in the normal position, all I get is a free wheeling trigger. Is there possibly a spring that may have been lost when I removed the slide? I also noticed that the trigger lever appears to be loose.
I bought this as my carry weapon and I hope the problem can be solved as the dealer I bought it from does not take returns.

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Trigger malfunction

It sounds to me that the transfer bar/trigger return spring has come out of its engagement with the transfer bar. This is very easy to do with the slide off the frame and it is kind of a PITA to get that spring back on the bar.

Here is an assembly guide made buy one of the members (TTH) here http://p64resource.com/board/P64_Assembly.zip download the .pdf and skip to pages 46 - 52...that is the section pertinent to your problem.

Hope this helps, mine has been my CCW piece for the past 4 years...its an excellent gun.

Thanks,

I found that reference and you are right!! It is a royal PITA to put back on. I must not have the right tools. I have been trying for the last 30 minutes unsucessfully to get the spring under the transfer bar. It is not easy by any means. I feel like I need at least three hands to do it. I'll try again tomorrow after I get some sleep.

Just another quick update. I thought I had the problem solved but now I have the opposite problem. The trigger will not pull.

I am totally baffled at this point. Maybe it is time to see a gunsmith? ???

I'm glad you got the first problem fixed!

Strange about the trigger....do you mean it doesn't move at all? Or that the trigger moves like it should but doesn't engage the hammer as if the safety was on?

If its the former, then I'm not sure what the issue could be.

If its the latter then the disconnector might be stuck in its downward (safe on) position and just needs to be freed.

with the slide on the frame (to prevent the transfer bar from coming of the spring again), take the grip panels off and check the other end of the transfer bar. Make sure that the disconnector isn't stuck (you can see the bottom end of it here) AND check to make sure that the transfer bar is properly lined up with the hammer.

Page 58 in the assembly manual has a good pic of how the disconnector should engage the transfer bar.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Now that I have had a chance to sleep on it, here is a quick recap of the sequence of events. After removing the slider and cleaning, I replaced the slider. At that point, I noticed that when pulling the trigger, it did not function correctly, it just freely moved back and forth. After checking your first responses, I did see that the spring appeared to be disconnected from the transfer bar.
I removed the hand grip and spent four hours working on this issue. I finally thought I had the problem solved and reassembled the hand grip. However, now the trigger will not pull. And I did make sure the safety was off.

Now that I have solved the problem and am back in business, is there a recommended or suggested way to keep this from occuring again? I will be going back to the range in a week or two and I am sure I will be cleaning the weapon again.

Thanks,
