Decided against the P-64

Post by matheath »

Hey All,

Well, I've been lusting after a Polish baby since finding this forum. Looking at the curves, etc, etc, etc, so I finally got to handle one. You know, I'd heard everyone talking about the heavy trigger pull, but I used to shoot an AMT backup .45 and it had a monster, so I thought this couldn't be all that bad. Oh my! It has to be dry-fired to be appreciated. That thing is like trying to pull Rosie O'Donnell in a little red wagon.

I wasn't anticipating that the pull would stack that much at the end. I expected the heavy weight to be felt at the early part of the pull where your finger strength is better. Not the case. The heavy stuff happens right at the end of the pull where the muscles in the pointer finger lose their ability to contract. I think I squeezed it off in double action maybe 4 times or so. Other times, I literally couldn't do it. Wow.

I know you guys love them, but I think I'm out as a Polish-a-phile. I carry guns for self-defense and I'm afraid of what opposing attorneys might do to me if I were to change the spring. So, as much as I hate to say it, I believe I'm gonna have to look elsewhere to satiate my gun-lust.

I know that my P-64's D/A pull was very tight when I got it and YES, I changed the mainspring and love it. Will I have a problem in court?? I hope to never need the gun but I don't think that the spring will be an issue. I'm not even sure that it would be known unless you mentioned it.
In the end, we all have to purchase the gun that fits us the best and we are comfortable with, especially for CCW use. I am very comfortable with my P-64.
Good luck in your search.

I have to say, I keep pulling that DA trigger and it really seems to be getting easier--but then I also have a Nagant revolver, so maybe I'm just learning to live with tough DA pulls--LOL! but if I decide to carry the P64, I will be carrying it de-cocked, safety off I think. I belive I can cock the hammer as fast or faster than I can manipulate the safety, and the SA pull is no trouble...I also have to say, I can just see some blasted lawyer (I am one so i can say that--LOL!) making a big fuss over changing the springs-- "So, Mr Defendant, you MODIFIED this MILITARY PISTOL to give it a HAIR TRIGGER????" And I can bloody well see a jury box full of hand-picked cheeseheads buying that crap--I have serious concerns about the jury system as presently constituted myself...

Matheath,

No problem with you not likeing the pistol! We all have different tastes, and yes the DA pull is HEAVY! But please come back and check out us out once in a while for new updates.

We are hoping to have new spring pacs from Wolff Springs soon that will cure the heavy DA, and since they are manufactured by a reputable company, that may appease and court actions from changing springs.

You are always welcome here, regardless if you have a P-64 or not! Please keep us informed on what pistol you decide to buy.

I wonder how the fact that you changed a spring would become known in court. I doubt that absent you telling the prosecuter anyone would be able to tell.
I never changed my spring and my trigger has become very usable mainly through use. I guess I have to worry that I will be accused of lubricating my p64 and pulling the trigger to lighten the pull. I think I am willing to take that risk.

It wouldn't be a prosecutor--it would be an ambulance chaser suing you for shooting his angelic client--and he would have a tool called "discovery" that would allow him to find out all kinds of stuff about your gun...
BTW I think the same thing is happening with MY DA trigger pull--it's getting more manageable all the time...

First of all, let me apologize for several of our "commentators", who perhaps mean well, but....
Having said that, "I feel your pain", I cannot pull the DA trigger with two fingers, much less hit anything if I try. My solution, perhaps not popular with courts, was a modification of the safety, preventing the hammer drop, but leaving the trigger disconnected AND the firing pin block in place, 'cocked and locked', like ALL my carry pieces (well except for my AMT Backup 9?) "I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6" To each his own, with respect.

I fail to understand how a modification to the trigger would have an impact in court.

If you are justified in using deadly force, why would it matter if you had a "stock" P64 or not.

If they could use a trigger modification against you, then why not the type of gun or caliber ?

If you pull the trigger, it is with the knowledge that you are justified in killing the attacker. Shouldn't matter how.

I think a simple comparison by your defense attorney would suffice. Demonstrate the P-64 with the stock spring. (I have this mental picture of the opposing attorney not being able to pull the trigger.) Demonstrate the P-64 with the 14 (or 16 or 18#) spring. Show table of comparisons of trigger pulls (including the police weapons in your locality). Tell the story of why the stock P-64 trigger pull was designed so high (hard Polish primers). Discuss how the other option is to draw the hammer back and reduce the pull dramatically (single action). A modified P-64 fired DA is by no means a "hair trigger".

Also maybe it would have to be a fairly bright attorney to connect the dots. Although I guess he or she could google P-64, and...never mind.

OK, I admit that If your explanation on why you shot someone was that "I didn't mean to shoot, the gun just went off". Modification of the trigger could be a reason for prosecution.

But even then, a 14lb trigger is hardly a "hair trigger".

If you shot the guy 2 feet to the right of the attacker by accident, I suppose you could always say that it was because of the 27lb trigger pull that always puts the first shot 2 feet to the right of target :D
