Ammo Score!

Post by exe »

I was out early this AM and came across a garage sale. I thought I saw those green boxes of Norinco ammo from the driveway as I went by so I backed up and decided to take a look.

Figured it was just boxes of 762x39 (Which is cool cus I could always use it in my AK or SKS) or some other surplus caliber so I was not sure if I would buy it or not.

What a shock when I found it was 12 boxes of ammo for my new P-64 :)

8 boxes of Norinco Green box

4 boxes of TWC Russian Surplus ammo

All ammo was like new.

The price? 20 bucks.. yup thats right.. 20 bucks.

Guy no longer had a mak and wanted to sell off all this ammo. The ammo was like new and he even threw in an ammo can.

I love garage sales in rural Nevada :)

Great score! The TCW in particular is good stuff - 109-grain and travels over 1,000fps.

... that may be a bit hot for the P-64

What is the hottest ammo you would recommend for the P-64?

Yeah the very first ammo I shot in this gun was that stuff.. OUCH the web of my hand likes the lighter ammo :) Nothing I could not handle, but it hurt a bit.

I shot some 90 grain stuff after that and it was much better.

Troy:

I owe some sort of reply to your question. I was hoping Norm or others would stand up first.

There isn't much to reference when it comes to shooting the heavier, hotter loads in the P-64. Without a good reference for the design criteria of the pistol I'm cautious.

You can find a lot of information from shooters over the years in regards to the Makarov. It's a general consensus that the Makarov can handle the heavier loads, but it's advised to add a heavier recoil spring to prevent frame damage from the slide slamming harder in reaction to heavier loads.

The P-64 has a lighter frame. Are there heavier recoil springs that will help absorb the shock of heavier bullets? Norm can chime in; I haven't followed those threads. But with the stock springs and the lighter-than-Makarov frame I only want to fire the standard 9x18 rounds in my P-64: a 92 - 96-grain bullet that travels in the range of 900 - 1,030 fps. That's what it was built for.

Alright, alright if no one else what to say it I will...you don't want to shoot that old stuff, look at how tattered some of the green Norinco boxes are...I'll do something I shouldn't do and offer to take it off your hands for a huge profit, I'll give you $25 for the whole lot, that's 25% profit, where are you gonna get that type of return on your money?!

Nice find, shot safe. 8~)

+1 with nbender and Norm, the hotter loads are fine for the Makarov, and probably a some other 9x18 pistols, but the only ones I have are the P-64's and the Makarov's. I don't reload, so I stay in the 93-95gr range with my ammo in my P-64's, all are original in that I have not change anything except the grips, over 2000 rds in each and no problems, if it ain't broke, I don't fix it, the thumbrest grips for me sucked, so I replace the grips.

Its ok, I plan to pick up a Makarov anyway.. this little P64 has given me the surplus handgun bug now.. lol

Before this I was all Glocks, Sigs and HK's.. Now I am thinking about my next purchase of a Mak or a CZ52 :)

Eventually that heavier ammo WILL get shot in a gun more suited for it.

Thankfully the Norinco boxes are all 94 grain stuff so it should be fine for the P64
