CZ 82 Refinishing

Thinking of trying a cold blue on my cz 82. To take the finish off with paint thinner I know to take the grips off. Would a field strip be enough to do this. Thanks Ron

I took the trigger guard off mine then sand blasted it with Aluminum oxide. Under the paint they have sort of a parkerized finish. I did it in H&K Black, ordered a set of night sights from CZUSA and installed them while the gun was torn down.

Wish i had looked at your post a little more carefully, after soaking the pistol in paint thinner for1 hour and checking it I thought man that is some tough paint, sooooo I let it sit overnight. Then about 6:30 this morning I reread your post. Got the stripper on it now. ::)

I essentially disassembled the guns and stripped the old paint with "Zip-Strip", rinsed, cleaned off stray paint with 280 grit sand paper and super fine 0000 steel wool. Then I degreased the gun and used rust/blue remover, rinsed and then repeated with the degreaser. Finally I blued the guns with a liquid blue (Birchwood Casey) and worked the metal with more super fine 0000 steel wool to even the bluing over the metal surfaces, rinsing with cold water after each application. I repeated the bluing application process a few times until darked. It actually come out close to the darkness I got with the bead blasted and parkerized finishes on my other guns but with a slightly reflective patina finish.

Right now I use Sharpie to touch up LOL.
Has anyone tried or thought about powder coating the slide?
I do powder coating at home and wonder if any one has tried it?
Maybe I'll try it.
Thanks for the tip of the stripper.I was thinking about if it would work or not.

How far do I need to disassemble to refinish?

Hey Norm, I was reading this article about duarcoat and ceramic header paint. I'm still confused about how far I need to take the gun down. I have an old sestima that is a great 1911, but looks bad. I have access to a bead blaster. How far do I need to take the 1911 down for bead blasting. You may not remember, but I had to call you when I took my CZ82 apart. I'm still confused about how far I need to take the gun down.

When I blued mine, I only field stripped it and took off the trigger guard. No problem. Aircraft stripper worked great removing the old finish.
