Ok, maybe I'm just a little stupid but how can I get this board to send me notifications on topics I've subscribed to?

First, go in to you profile and hit the "bookmarks" tab. Then click on "manage bookmarks". Set your default bookmark setting to "email". After that, any time you want to get an email on a thread just add it to you bookmarks by clicking on "add bookmark" at the top of any thread.
