take off grips
cock the hammer , there is a hole in the hammer strut
Image

put a strong wire in it

Image

then pull the trigger allowing the hammer to go forward

then push the hammer spring pin out
Image

you should have the spring, hammer strut, and mag release all in one piece

next lock it up in a vise if you don't have a vise you can use a pair of vise grips
Image

Image

take a small pair of vise grips and clap down on the mag release, then press down , pull the wire out let up on the mag release take out spring put new spring in press down on mag release put wire back in
put spring, hammer strut, and mag release back in gun, put hammer spring pin , cock hammer pull wire out

I have been meaning to post this comment for ever. I want to thank norm for this thread. I hade always said I would not change the spring since I liked and had gotten use to the trigger in double action, and etc.. well I have been trying to work on my pistols ,and rifles more as part of a self imnprovement project in repair and maintance . This seemed like a good way to do it and build confidence... well with Norms help and pictures even I got it right.. while I was at it did the PA 63 at same time.. like the new triggers on both.. Thanks Norm

What weight hammer spring would you recommend to install?

I'd get the 3 spring kit and try them out. I'm running with the 20 pounder right now. I'm happy with the lighter than stock double action, yet still has a decent pull for added safety.
