Sort Of Replacement Grip Nuts

Post by stibnite »

That darn grip nut seems so small, that I'm afraid that I will lose it at some point. Of course, this would be a disaster if I didn't have a spare...

I thought I would show a picture of a nut that I found at the hardware store, simple metric hex nuts (M3, .50 pitch) that works pretty good. A blueing pen would be best, although I couldn't find mine so I used a black permanent marker. Not bad! They are approximately the same diameter and thickness as the original nut, but of course that one is round. Not a bad idea to keep a few handy.

Glad you showed us that--I already lost my grip nut! actually made one out of one that I had, but it is not precisely the right size--I rounded it off on a belt sander to make it look a little better...Thanks again for the info!

This one really oughta be a sticky! Those grip nuts are absolutely necessary, yet easily lost with no replacements available. This is a terrific fix you have provided.

lost mine too, and the ones from the harware store are too fat (threads would require a longer screw to engage)

The M3 .50 pitch nuts I found are pretty thin. I saw thicker ones too on my quest. Here is a picture of one after I used the blueing pen:

If you use a blueing pen, you can't use the stainless steel nuts.

If you can't find one, send me a PM and we can work out some kind of transaction.

blueing cadeium plated screws and nuts

hold over propane torch till red
quinch in oil or water to cool off
buff part with wire weel
reheat with propane torch till red
quinch in oil to harden part
the part will be blue black

I have been doing this for small parts for over 30 years

No wonder my grip screw just spins - I finally realized there must have been a nut on the end.

Grrrrr ... down to the hardware store. Thanks for the tips.

Oh - and Stibnite, how did you get the ore of antimony for a handle? I've got some great pieces I picked up at a placer mine in the Fairbanks District.

nbender -

I'm partial to cool sounding ore names... I have been known to poke around in some of the old mines and workings in the hills nearby. Could be close to you too if your handle is specific to your locality. Antimony was mined way up the North Fork of a river that might flow into your town, around a big mountain, sigh, what was the name of it? Sound about right?

The Bear Basin Mines are up the Snoqualmie River, past Mt Si which fills my view to the north:

I haven't been there. Sorry about hijacking the thread so touroughly, especially a sticky.

I did find an M3 nut and it fits. One of these days I'll try the blueing process that NORMSTRUTTON described.
