I didn't flatten my replacement spring out no issues except that the heavier recoil spring makes it more difficult but that's to be expected

Finally got a response from Wolff Gunsprings.

"Thank you for your email and recent order. If you are referring to our recoil spring not being ground on the ends, that is true but not grinding the end of the spring does not change installation nor does it require additional tools to install the spring or disassemble the pistol. We do deburr the small end (gripper coil) to prevent scratching the barrel when installing."

So either Mr. Andrews doesn't know what he's talking about, or the more likely scenario of there just being too much "spring" is preventing me from pulling the slide all the way back.

I put a 20# in one and a 22# recoil spring in another. I just couldn't get the slide(s) off! Age is not my friend but these two literally defeated every attempt to remove the slides. I had to have a friend get them off for me! I flattened the ends (no good grinder so I used a sanding drum on a Dremel) and flattened both ends on both springs. I can get both ON and OFF now, so I agree there must be something to it.

They're sending me a replacement spring with flat ends, I'll post again once it gets here and let you know if the ends made a difference.

Yup, the flat-end springs caused me none of the trouble that the unground springs did.
