Slide problem
Slide problem
I've read the threads on a stuck slide. I'm 73 and perhaps don't have the strength in my hands any longer.
I was able to remove the slide, but cannot get it back on. Safety off, magazine out, it will not move up and back
for mounting. It seems stuck, and I cannot raise it, so it won't pull back and re-seat on the frame. Could use some advice.
Thanks,
Bob Rinaldi

Re: Slide problem
Did you move the trigger guard out to the side to unlock the slide
Re: Slide problem
Welcome to the forum.
Yes push in on the trigger bar on the left side to make sure it is seated.
It doesn't take much for it to impede the slide.

Re: Slide problem
Thanks Keith150 and Curly1. I did have the trigger guard down and resting on the frame. So it should have been disengaged.
Still stuck. Can't lift and pull back to seat the slide. And cannot lift it and pull forward to remove it.

Re: Slide problem
You may need to just give it a good yank and lift could be gunked up
Re: Slide problem
The slide's front edge is probably stuck/wedge at the frames front edge by the muzzle, happened to me before, I had to use a small screw driver and pried it out.
Re: Slide problem
Still stuck. Where is the slide stop ?

Re: Slide problem
I replicated how mine got stuck before. Does it look like this?
If so, look at the front/muzzle area, if the barrel is off center from where the slide goes through, get a small flat crew driver or a dull knife, place it along the gap/opening between slide and the frame's edge, wiggle it to free the slide.

Re: Slide problem
Thanks Gemini1.
Yes, your first image is just where mine was stuck. The barrel was not off center.
I worked on it for a while this morning, and got it free!
Is the stuck-slide a problem with the P64 ?
Any other problems I should be aware of?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Slide problem
No, I wouldn't call it a problem with the pistol. It only happened to once, the first time I dis-assembled the pistol. Not really quite familiar with it, so I could say its an operator problem. Its how you angle the slide as it goes/pulled in once the recoil spring touches the shoulder area in front of the slide. I was just able to replicate the problem since I already knew how to undo it, if it happens again. But it never did.
One other issue you might have, just as many others me included had. with the hammer cocked, if you engage the safety on, while the firing pin block will engage, and the trigger will free willy/not engage, but the hammer will not fall, as it should. If this happens to you, chances are the disconnector is the culprit. Check and see if yours displays this issue. If it does, what I did with mine was take the disconnector out, laid the top area that rub against the slide on an anvil and hammer it a few times. The idea is to add or extend the metal by a bit to let it slide down deep enough to let the hammer fall down when safety is engage. This part is available at Gunbroker if in case it gets messed up.

Re: Slide problem
Last question (for now). What is the lb rating of the original recoil spring? 18lbs? 20lbs? etc
Thanks,
Bob

Re: Slide problem
Bob, the original/stock spring is over 20 lbs on DA and about 4 on SA.
This guy made a measurement using a fish scale, might be crude, but at least he gets an average reading.
