P64 Newbie- Stiff Safety

Post by Char181 »

New to the site and have found it very useful so far in working on my first P64 purchase. Your complete disassembly instructions were most helpful as I completely disassembled the pistol to clean and polish. I have lightly polished the friction surfaces with 1000 grit sandpaper and buffed same with a Dremel. Have installed 18# hammer spring and 22# recoil spring and new firing pin spring. Safety is still too stiff for me even after polishing the safety lever cylinder. Think I'll try the safety detent pin rounding and maybe a little more polishing of the safety lever. Have never fired the pistol yet and look forward to doing so as soon as I can get satisfied with the safety. May use the p64 as a carry piece but would hate to have to get it off safe as it is now if I really had to use it in a hurry for a defensive purpose. I also have 2 CZ82's that I enjoy shooting and intend to have one refinished and install custom grips from Hungary on it.
Think I may see another P64 in my future as I am enjoying my C&R license.

Welcome. Let us know how the safety job works out for you. It is the main reason why I don't EDC my p64. :hi:

What I did with mine, was to file/polish the safety shaft area where the detent pin sits, at an angle by a little bit, as well as rounding (also by just a tad) the end of the pin. My safety was also stiff when I got it, but it's now running smooth after doing the above. Just take your time and function check till you're satisfied with your mod.

Thanks for your replies gentlemen. Looks like a wealth of knowledge that I can use on this forum. I always like to review post and disassembly procedures and experiences before tearing into a new firearm. I'll keep you posted on my safety issue and can't wait to fire this "little beast."

Finally got my p64 safety smoother and much more to my liking. I gently filed and rounded over and polished the safety detention pin as suggested in other post. This improved the stiffness of the safety but I wanted to take it to the next level while still having the safety good and functionally safe. I'm a bit of a perfectionist I guess. As previously suggested this first step should be tried first as it is cheaper to purchase a detent pin if you screw it up than it is to replace a screwed up safety catch. My second step was to deal with the safety catch and smoothing its surfaces. I hand polished the friction surfaces of the safety catch with 1000 grit sandpaper then polished them with "Brasso" using a cheapie Harbor Freight rotary tool (smaller and handles better than my Dremmel). The Brasso seems to have small amount of grittiness to it I feel gives a slight abrasive affect. I then cut a wooden toothpick and used it as a mandrel in the rotary tool to polish out the "diamond" recesses in the safety catch. Again I used Brasso on the toothpick and tried to polish out and round over the edge of the "diamond" that the detent pin rolls over as you switch from "safe" to "fire". Notice that you will only need to address one edge of each "diamond" recess. I did not want to grind in the "diamond" areas for fear of removing metal that may ruin the peice. I only polished these areas. I have added the Wolf hammer and recoil springs and feel I have greatly improved the functioning of this firearm. I assume no responsibility or liability for anything you may do to your firearms as a result of my shared experience in this post.
