'30 M1 Garand

Post by MJ1 »

My first job overseas was to mobilize 800 M1's for civilian irregular defense forces; CIDG's. They came strapped to pallets covered a black goo like a wax. I was sure I would never get the diesel smell off my hands an clothing . I did this in a tent with a large fly standing on duckboards in six inches of rain water.

I was getting out six or seven rifles a day cleaned inspected and test fired. This would never satisfy the need plus any number of rifles were beyond using and became spare parts. This would change quickly as I was give some help three mountain people in loin cloths and two GI trashcans with immersion gas heaters . We now turned out twenty rifles a day. Still not near enough.

Have a great day.

Just the original body parts I was issued a little worse for wear. Oh and a pair of boots and some driving skills that serve me today.

Photoshop yes but not far off the real deal. Local artist criticizing the local municipality. This road the Camino 27 de Abrile was a 1:40 min ride to the county seat and took several years to pave and cost a lot. The first rain created giant potholes in what had been a 40 minute drive on the new surface back to a 1:30 drive. On the old road crocks had taken over all to river and creek crossings and the picture was a political barb. Didn't change a darn thing at the beach.

What is your M1 like ? A tool or a safe queen ?

Mine are tools so not so pretty.

Are not they handsome ? Recall many of the users were just as tall as the M1.

And heavy too. Can't imagine being a 120lb 19 year old lugging it around in In the Pacific or Europe along with every thing else.

I can relate to that. At least the M14 I carried for two years in harms way with a full combat load of five magazines and three bandoleers.
