Type 99 Arisaka Purchase

Along with the potential Mosin purchase I'm also considering buying a Type 99 Arisaka. This wouldn't be a shooter for me, mainly a collection gun. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with these. The guy has two for sale, one early model and the other "last ditch" model. I'm really only interested in the early model and I talked him down to $230 for it.

He sent me some photos and it looked like its in pretty good shape. Clean shiny barrel, some cracks and dings on the stock but not too bad.

This is a "bring back" so no import marks but the mum has been scrubbed off.

Do you guys think the value of this will go up in the next 20-30+ years and if so how much? Should I buy this one as well?

Thanks.

Can you post the pics here? I am thinking if it is in reasonably good shape and NOT sportorized then yes. A quick check of the gun auctions shows prices from 200.00 for sporterized with mum to 475.00 for non sportered without the mum and up as quality increases. But without seeing how bad the damage is.......well, you know buying sight unseen without knowing / trusting the seller is foolish. And if it is in reasonably good shape it should increase in value. Look at what the Moisins have done in the last 10 years.

That thing looks good. I would buy it. That bore looked pretty damn good and the proof marks were in good shape.

I was afraid you'd say it was a good deal and I should buy it lol. "I got my tax refund...and its gone!" lol

Do you or anyone have any experience with shooting this? I heard the action is one of the strongest of all the bolt action rifles with is neat. I researched the ammo prices  Holy cow! But I'm more interested in this being an "investment" rifle I sell down the road than a shooter. That's what the mosin will be for.

I was very impressed with my Type 99's. They have very stout actions and they shoot very, very well. I reload, so ammo is no problem. Very simple to work on, too. Don't be afraid to shoot it once in awhile. Parts are still available if you need them, but who knows for how long that will be. No exercise can lead to problems as well. I say buy some rounds and shoot it.

The 7.7x58 is an easy cartridge to reload for thankfully. As far as the "last ditch" rifles go, mine is early 1945 production and it is perfectly safe to fire with full power loads. The true last ditch weapons were nothing more than a pipe wired to a bamboo stick. I use a 180gr Speer HotCor over 40ish of IMR4350. If you post some pictures of the left side of the receiver or PM them to me, I can look up the information and series number for you. For factory loaded ammo, check Graf and Sons for their 7.7

*The Type 99 also have chrome lined bores.

Update: I didn't end up buying the Type 99 and instead got the Fin M39 and I am enjoying that purchase. Right now I'm looking to decide on a defensive carbine (AR-15 or Ak). Just wanted to update you guys on what happened.

Yes it is strongest bolt action rifle among couple of rifles.

Of course it has a strong action, the last ditch ones would've blown up in the face of their users if they weren't built like a brick sh*t house.
I really liked the 6.5mm Arisaka I had when I was a teenager and my father taught me to reload, it was a VERY forgiving rifle in terms of handloads.
