Ammunition Test

Just got my P64 last week for potential EDC. Was using a G27 but it was just too wide and I really prefer DA/SA with manual safety for EDC. I have run a variety of ammo during two visits to the range and figured I'd share my results.

Gun is running stock springs. I don't mind the DA pull (I have bear hands), I stage my pull and the break is very predictable. Unfortunately my beefy hands mean a low grip to avoid slide bite so I am getting a beating in the web. I love the concealability and accuracy of the gun though so will probably invest in some Marshall beavertail grips.

Range Visit 1:
Had given gun a brake cleaner bath and basic cleaning
50 rounds Monarch
10 rounds Hornady CD FTX

CD FTX ran without issues. I had 3 failure to feed on the Monarch. All three instances had the slide not returning to battery. Pushing slide forward would feed the round.

Last 8 rounds - 21 feet - Monarch:

Shot 5 round clip slow fire, then my last 3 rounds on sight acquisition (you can guess which those are lol). Overall very pleased with the accuracy of the gun.

Range Visit 2:
Soaked the gun in mineral spirits and did a FULL cleaning
12 rounds Hornady XTP
12 rounds Monarch
12 rounds Red Army
12 rounds Silver Bear FMJ
2 rounds Hornady FTX (shot immediately after a clip of XTP to compare recoil)

Ran clip of XTP first, then clip of each ammo in order and then repeated. No malfunctions. Hottest round appeared to be the Monarch, then Silver Bear, XTP, FTX and lastly Red Army. I liked the Red Army, mostly for the reduction in recoil. Also XTP definitely felt hotter than the FTX. Can't comment on the accuracy of the different rounds as I am still working on my grip and am not consistent enough to draw any real conclusions.

Final thoughts: Red Army for practice, FTX for EDC. Recoil on those two rounds appeared pretty close which is important to me for practice. I will probably pick up some Brown Bear FMJ in the future to test as well.

Fantastic routine, I must say.
I EDC my P-64. Stock springs. I carry HCD, and shoot Brass exclusively.
I am of the opinion it is gentler on the weapon.
Slim, trim, light, and handy.
What is not to like!

Very well done sir and welcome to The Brotherhood. Make sure you check out Polidh Irons V.05 grips before you decide on grip replacement. They are awesome, feel great and I think help tame the beating your hand is getting.
