A report of sorts....

I purchased some "rot gut" 9mm NATO brass to reform into 9x18mm. They look like range sweepings.

Some of the brass is badly stained. I tried to use a conventional tumblr to clean off the stains. Didn't work.

I punched out the primers with a Lee Primer Capper. The 30 caliber works fine with 9mm NATO.

I decided to soak in vinegar. Thirty minutes. This took out the stains. I plan follow with a tumble in Rice (no kidding) to shine them up. I am using Rice in order to keep the polishing compound off of my dies.

I'll ream out primer pocket with this tool...

I will follow this with a three step process....

1. Expand the mouth with a 9x18 expander.
2. Resize with 9x18 FL resize.
3. Trim to 18mm FL.

I'll go from there... prime, load and so on.

I've been doing that too except I just use nickel plated 9mm brass
so I can kind of keep them separate. It's easy to do and they work
great. I also use a cast bullet.

I've trimmed a lot of 9x19 brass down to 9x18 and have never found it to be necessary to expand before resizing... BUT, I have found it to be more difficult to impossible trim after resizing due to the case mouth being too small to insert the trimmer guide. This may depend on the actual equipment being used, but that has been my experience. I trim the fired brass as-is after firing, and deprime and resize afterwards, or use a Lee universal deprimer instead of a caliber-specific resizer/deprimer, then resize afterwards. I expand the case neck when loading the powder.
