W231 Makarov rounds

Post by fknipfer1 »

9mm Mak
East German
115gr LFN Rimrock
WSP Primer
W231 Powder
Starline Brass
COL .970
10 rounds
3.4grs------------3.5grs-----------3.6grs
Low 863 fps-----Low 908 fps-----Low 922 fps
High 918 fps---- High 928 fps----High 960 fps
Avg 895 fps-----Avg 917 fps-----Avg 938 fps
es 54 ------------es 20------------ es 38
sd 17 ------------sd 6------------- sd 13

Brass in great shape, primers staying round and no bulging out, no flating of primer, no splits. Accuracy at 25yds very good 5 to 7" groups. Not shooting for real accuracy as yet, just trying to find round.
Average at 938fps very good shooting round. Have two more loads to try with W231 3.7 and 3.8grs maybe. 3.7grs may give me the 950fps I am looking for and that is as far as it goes. Pulled a BB round and it looks like W231 but who knows. This data is only good in my EG Makarov and all others try at their own risk. Makarov is a pretty good size pistol so recoil is very bearable.

fkniper1,

Thanks for the post for your reloads for your EG Mak, so far I'm still shooting the factory loads from MFS, Mesco, Norinco, and S&B that I bought tons of years ago when the price was reasonable for all my 9x18 handguns, I do reload but so far not for the 9x18, but I and saving all my 9mm brass for some day trimming it back for when I do have to reload for the 9x18. I understand your trying to find the sweet spot for your Mak, for me each handgun I reload for I have found there is a different sweet spot for each individual gun, even the same make, caliber and barrel so finding the right powder, primer, and bullet is for me is part of the enjoyment of reloading.

I did find one sweet spot for the gun it was 3.6grs of Unique but topped out at 865fps a little lower than I wanted. It would be great for a plinking or everyday messing around but I am looking for the defense load.
I think I am about there with the 115gr but I wouldn't shoot it everyday after I find the defense load it would be to hard on the pistol. I have 500ea 93grs LFN from Missouri Bullets that I will set up for my playing load. Cost is .10 for the round .03 for the primer and probably .015cents for the powder., about 15 cents per load or $6.50 a box of fifty.
Thanks for the reply
