My grips are screwed. (CZ999 Compact)

Post by gman68w »

I've got a Zastava CZ999 Compact. You've read the title, you probably knew that by now. The CZ999 Compact has grips, as most pistols do, and these grips are held down with screws. Screws for a flathead screwdriver. Screws with really shallow heads. I've stripped the one to hell and back, and I'm still having to use it (it's in their by virtue of the tension on the threads. It's literally hanging on by a thread), until I can get a new set from Numrich.

Thing is, I've already got a new set. For a Sig P226. The two are similar in look and feel, and you can even fit a Sig slide on it (won't cycle, though). The set of hex key screws I got, the posts are too short, too narrow, and have too few threads. I didn't think they'd fit, but the set was on sale for five bucks, so it didn't sting so much.

My question is, does anyone know of a way to Red Green these things so that they'll fit the frame? Some kind of epoxy that will fill the screw holes and set with these other screws inside, making hole new wholes (holy hell). What about the screws that were actually made for it? Any way to keep the heads from stripping? Mighta been I was just using a screwdriver with too narrow a head, all that torque being centered in the middle, instead of spread out across the whole screwhead.

Buy new screws from Zastava. They make and sell them.

Well I've done that, and like I said Numrich is the only place I know of.

Limited searching by me results in a possible option- Century Arms was the importer, contact them and ask how to get parts. Other wise take the original screws to Home Depot or a decent hardware store, they will have a thread gauge and should be able to tell you what thread pitch you have and maybe get a screw that you cam Red Green to proper length.

CAI was the first place I went to, they said they don't provide parts for this pistol, but pointed me towards Numrich. I'll look at Home Depot.

Sorry I cant be.more help. I have heard that was a pretty damn good pistol. How does it shoot? Another possible option is to go to a metal working shop and have screws cut to fit.

It's as accurate as you could want from something that looks like a Sig. Frame is a light alloy, so all the weight's in the slide. Barrel is chromelined, so go nuts with all the steel and cheap dirty ammo you can lay your hands on. The slide-to-frame fit is loose enough to make literally hosing it off the solution to getting it muddy. The trigger break is like celery. It's a clean snap if you're sharp with the pull, but feels a little mushy if you're gentler with it.

Sounds like a good dependable sidearm and those are the best. I wish you luck with your problem. Let us know how you get it taken care of. It may be the way to get grip screws repaired or replaced for those of us with other not very common pistols.

That's what I'm saying. Numrich has loads of original screws for it, so that's not a problem. I just wanted to know if there was a way to make screws fit that weren't made to fit. Sounds like that'll be more trouble than its worth, so I'll just get more of the originals, and look at finding a flathead screwdriver with a slightly thicker head so it doesn't strip so easy
