Charter Mag Pug issues. Advice?

Post by gman68w »

I'm gonna be sending this thing in for the third time to have the transfer bar replaced, which has snapped again. I really can't figure out why it's happening. When I first got it, I'd been able to put three 50-round boxes of .357 Magnum through it, no problems. Then I started using .38 Special because it was cheaper and I just wanted to plink.

Near as I can figure, the .38 Special is the issue, just because it happens more frequently with it than with the Magnum ammo. It's of a lower pressure, so I guess it's not expanding quickly enough to catch the chamber walls and stop it from slamming back into the pin, which puts too much stress on the bar for it not to crack over time. The other tell-tale sign pointing to this theory is all the black gunk that rings the bit where the firing pin comes through the frame.

Would having the cylinder replaced solve this issue? I figure the chamber walls have gotten "polished" over the years of cleaning, and there's nothing for the low-pressure cases to catch on.

I may be completely off, and it's something else like the frame being off-spec (none of the third-party grips I've ever ordered ever fit this thing, but it never occurred to me before that it might be an issue with the gun frame itself).

It's just so weird. It's always the transfer bar that I've had to send it back for. It's always snapped in the same spot at the base of it. The last time I sent it back, they recut the barrel and replaced the cylinder crane and the hammer itself for me (I didn't even know there was anything wrong with them), so they obviously had it taken apart and inspected the rest of it. If something was going to show up as the reason, they would have found it.

Anyway, here's the exploded view. The transfer bar (#42) is there on the right, with the trigger group. Any of you guys see anything that might be a cause?

I am certianly no expert but I am thinking timing. If the hammer is striking the transfer bar at the incorrect time it would place stress on the transfer bar that it was not intended to handle. Other than that I would not know.

Maybe, or it could be the hammer spring is too strong for this kind of a safety mechanism.

If it is the original spring then I doubt that would be it. But again I am not an expert. But I would ask them to check the timing.

Timing isn't just for the cylinder?

Timing, if I am correct, involves all moving parts that are involed with getting the thing to go bang. If the hammer falls too early the cylinder will not have lined up properly and the firing pin would possibly hit the cylinder wall which would cause a rebound against the transfer bar which it is not designed to handle. That is one scenario that I can think of.

I just spoke with Charter's chief of customer service (Read: Their only customer service rep), and she said "Yeah, just write on the repair for that this is the third time you're sending it in for the same issue, and that you want the whole thing scrapped and replaced. We'll take care of it.".

So there you are.

lol, that's what I told the guy at my FFL. Said "If this one futzes out, I'm gonna snatch up that M605 Poly you've had in the display case forever."

Yeah getting it replaced is cool and very good.of them to take care of a customer that way. Builds loyalty. But me? I would want to know EXACTLY what caused the problem in the first place cause I'm odd that way.

Yeah, that was a major point of irritation for me. They obviously had the whole thing apart to replace the cylinder crane and the hammer and to recut the barrel throat, so you'd think any other issues would pop up as well. It might be something as simple as the transfer bar being made from cheap cast metal, in which case scrapping it in favor of a Taurus might be a good idea anyway.

I have not heard of broken transfer bars being an issue with Charter Arms guns. I smell something other than defective part.

The guys over at HiPointFirearmsForums.com say they've heard about it being a common problem. And you know they're all experts. :D
