CZ52 or Tokarev (TT-33, Type 54, M57, etc)?

Post by bembry »

I'll probably wind up with both sooner or later, but which do you prefer, and why? I want to get one of the 7.62 x 25 shooters

I have been looking at Radom TT-33's at a few shops. I just wanted to stay with Radom. I did play with a new tok but the mag would not lock in place.

I have 2 cz-52s and like them both. I have an M57, a type 54, and a newer type 54 in 9mm. All go bang everytime. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

I've never handled a vz.52 or a TT-33, but do have one of the newly-made Zastava M57s. It's a great gun now that I managed to get the sights squared away.

I have a couple of CZ52s and one Chinese TT. All go bang and the bullet goes where the gun is pointed. I also have a couple of C96s but never, never use the 7.62 x 25 from the Eastern Bloc with these pistols unless you want to rapidly have the gun separate into its component pieces. Although the 7.62 x 25 Tokarev was designed around the 7.63 x 25 Mauser and they will chamber in either, the Tokarev round is 1500-1600 fps, the Mauser maxes at 1350-1400 fps and nice or even bad C96s are difficult to find. That's a good choice. I love the TT-33 but I hate the fact that the ATF requires them to have an add-on safety. almost everyone of these add-on is jury-rigged and bogus and can tie up the gun when you least expect it. I have always disabled/removed the safeties on mine.

On the Tokerev, the half-cock IS the safety and it works very well and it locks the slide. And the Russians were trained to carry it with an empty chamber but a lot of them carried a round in the chamber anyway and relied instead on the half-cock safety. Same thing with US GI's and the 1911. The manual of arms said to carry it with hammer down on an empty chamber but a lot of guys figured out you could carry it cocked and locked and never have a problem as long as you knew how to handle the gun.

But the M-57 has a slide mounted safety that's very well designed.

One note on the Chinese Norinco Tokerevs. The heat treating on the slide is usually soft and they will develop a burr where the slide comes back to cock the hammer that needs to be inspected regularly and filed once the burr starts to cause malfunctions, or preferably BEFORE the burr begins to cause malfunctions.

As far as the CZ-52's I like those too. I especially like how they look.

In fear of a Clinton shutdown on firearms in '08 I bought 3 CZ52's while they were cheap ($116.00 delivered to my door ... and one was an unissued!). Never been sorry of it. One is a 'one dot' (on top of slide). I put the Harrington firing pin kit in one, used that as a pattern and made a kit for another, changed out springs in those two as well. I left the unissued as is. I did shoot it as I don't plan on it going anywhere. I like these pistols and the caliber. I'd love to try one of the 33's.
