Picked up a new RIA M1911 A1 tody

Post by mike1050 »

I picked up a new Rock Island M1911 A1 today. Been looking to get a 1911 for some time now. Have heard a lot of good things from a few people about RIA, so I figured I would give it a shot. I will fallow up after a range trip.

Groovy.

What's the finish? It looks mat so I immediately think parked but it also looks very black so maybe something else?

I didn't really like 1911's when I first started shooting but people keep posting pics theirs and they always look so nice and seem to have such an anachronistic appeal that I find myself thinking maybe I'll have to borrow a friends and give the old gal a second chance.

Peace favor your sword,

You will like that 1911. It is probably the best bang for the buck in the 1911 world. A couple of friends have them, and they are good reliable shooters. I have a Kimber & Springfield Armory and was thinking about picking up one of those for an "all round" 1911! Really I just wanted an excuse for another gun! Let us know how it shoots!

All I can add is I love my RIA had it since they first came on markey and always tout RIA for someone who wants a good reliable, nicely finished economical 1911 . I have a few different one but really do like to gravitate to the RIA...

In the past I have always had trouble with accuracy shooting a 1911. My buddy picked up an RIA 1911 the other day and we took it to the range. He finally convinced me to shoot it and all I can say is wow. At 25ft the first time I had ever picked up the gun I shot an 8 round 2.5" group. It is not as comfortable to me as my P220 but it only cost about half the sig. Nice shooter and now sadly I am thinking I need to add one to my collection.

EDIT: Oh yeah congrats on the new toy :D

Congrats on the new pistola. The 1911 is a wonderful platform and I'll bet it you grow fond of it in a hurry! They're also one of the easiest guns to carry, imo.

I've shot my buddy's 9mm RIA 1911 and it was great! Learned how to take apart a 1911 on that sucker. The one I shot was a great shooter but not the prettiest thing ever. Regardless, the quality was great and the price was right. Congrats!

Got it to the range. Very accurate. I ordered a full length guide rod, shok-buffs, and a beavertail from Wilson Combat. I will post up some pics once I get it all together.

Trying to figure out if I should bob the GI hammer, or order a combat hammer. All the stuff for the mods should be here by the weeks end, with the exception of the grips coming from Dennis.

I agree with Norm, you're better off with the commander hammer. Also, I have no experience with shock buffers, but everything I've seen and heard indicates that they're not necessary and can sieze up the gun. Might save you a few bucks.

I actually went the other way and removed the flgr on mine and replaced it with an Ed Brown GI rod and plug.

Got the guide rod today. I decided not to use the buffer. The only problem I ran into was I could not get the barrel bushuing on with with the slide on the frame. I had to put in on with the slide off then put the slide on the frame. I think I may need to file it a tad. Other than that it looks great.
