Pattern 1914 vs. M1917 Enfields

Post by primarchbentley »

Other than the obvious differences between .303 and .30-06, are there any differences of note between these two rifles?

I've had my eye on an M1917 for some time, but recently stumbled across a small batch of P14s (Winchester make, no less) for a decent amount less than M1917s I've been seeing.

I have a an Eddy Stone 1917 . I think the P14s very rare in this country as for the 303 I also have 2 No 1 MK III and a Savage No 4 MK I, I like the 303 cartridge , I think if I found a P14 that was in good shape I'd buy it
if you need more info on them

I've seen only one Eddystone ever, and that was over two years ago. It had been sporterized. An excellent stock, metal again excellent, chambered for .30-06. They wanted $600.00 for it, sat in that rack for a long time(well over a year). It's pretty bad when you walk in a place and there's nothing you haven't seen before. I have no idea what it was worth either stock or sporterized.

Aside from the bolts not interchanging, you need to be careful on headspacing. The 303 is rimmed, the 30-06 is not. In the 30-06, it headspaces on the shoulder so need to be careful. The 303 is much more forgiving. Dave_n

Here's some more info on the P-14/M1917 Enfield and the M1917's by Remington, Winchester and Eddystone which was a subsidiary of Remington.

Cherry's Fine Guns has a number of P14s, in what appears to be the current reasonable price range for these (according to the handful I've seen elsewhere). See the bottom (under "Winchesters") here: http://cherrys.com/longguns.htm

I have my order placed and will likely receive Tues. or Wed. of next week (and will report accordingly). I'll post a review once I do.

Old thread but what the heck...

While I've never held a P-14, I understand they are equipped with a volley sight on the right side of butt stock.

Here's my friend aiming my M1917 Eddystone...
