My grandfather was sent to Hawaii after Pearl Harbor. My dad was with the 4th Infantry Division & fought in Vietnam. My brother-in-law just returned this year from Iraq and a fellow officer with my dept. is currently stationed there. Two uncles in the Air Force and numerous cousins in the Army and Air Force.

So many people have no idea how much we truly owe to our veterans. Our society is so spoiled and we are so far removed from the concept of being opressed (granted it was 230 yrs ago). I think some people should have to spend about three months trying to live in a country like China, Iran, or even the "free" Russia. People have no idea how good we really have it here.

Thank you to all Veterans, Past and Present and May God Bless You.

My Mother was a nurse in "Persia" as it was called then, and later traveled with the troops through Italy:

My father was a Major and was sent to India. He was a doctor, and travelled and ran what would become known as a Mash unit for the Chinese Army. Mom and dad met on the ship going overseas. She always said that she dropped her gas mask to attract dads attention.

Toy Soldier

I have a toy soldier that sits high up on my shelf,
I'm not allowed to play with him, so he sits there by himself,
He looks so alone, yet so handsome and tall,
As he watches over me... fighting for us all.

I wish that I could reach him, just to tell him that I care,
But, I am yet too small to reach him way up there,
Even though he can't hear me, I pray for him each night,
I pray for peace on earth..so he won't have to fight.

As I grew taller and wiser, I begin to understand,
That the toy soldier upon my shelf was a picture of a man.
As I reached out for it, I was able to finally see
That the toy soldier that I admired...looked just like me.

Our soldiers are not wooden, they have a family somewhere,
They have wives and children and parents who care,
And though they can't hear us, we pray each night
That our toy soldiers...won't have to fight.

Vickie Forrest Wiggs

Thanks Norm,

God and soldiers, are easily forgotten until needed.

US Army - RA - August 18, 1971 to August 16, 1974.

I am reminded of a Naval museum in Charleston harbor that I visited once. There was a WWII destroyer there that you could walk around inside of, among other boats. It had a guest sign in book.

I was reading thru the comments that people had left and totally agreed with this one - "I just finished touring this boat and this is the first time that I was ever glad I was in the Army!"

Those Navy guys being out at sea in those things with people trying to sink them miles from land - they have my full appreciation. :-*
