Does the Slide Impact the Trigger Guard?

Post by tunnelrat »

A dear friend and fellow P-64 shooter pointed this out to me:

Once you get the gun field stripped hold the frame in your hand (just the frame). Put the trigger guard in its normal position.

Now look where the end of the trigger guard protrudes up into the frame. That particular position is precisely between the two points on the slide and frame where they would come together during firing.

If you notice, the trigger guard has some spring to it. The slide impacts the upper portion of the trigger guard instead of the barrel block on the frame thus preventing direct slide to frame contact. It may act somewhat like a recoil buffer to help protect the gun from battering by keeping the repeated impact of the slide from damaging the frame or the slide itself.

That is possibly why I keep feeling that it bangs my fingers. Instead of dissipating recoil, it channels it into the grip area!
