P64 shooting tips

Post by 747flyer »

Shot my p64 for the first time today. Recoil IS as bad as they say, but I managed to get the hang of it (web of my hand still hurts though  ). My accuracy was pretty mediocre however, and I was wondering if you experienced p64 shooters had any tips on how to best grip the gun and other such thing to get the most accuracy and shoot-ability out of it. Thanks in advance!

Get some Polish Iron grips, that will help a lot with the recoil problem so you will stop flinching. And then relax and concentrate.
Close enough for Government work will get you dead, ask any Vet.

At the least try a Hogue wrap around grip. It helps with your grip but won't help the web of your hand.
I got the PI grip for mine and it made a world of difference.

A Hogue Handall Jr (or PI) grip are both a little wider which helps spread the recoil across a wider surface lessening the "sting" in any one part of the web of the hand. A set of Wolf Spring (I did both recoil and main springs) takes the recoil away a little and deals with atrocious double-action trigger pull (my single action is WAY smooth now too.) But my best advice is to be positive and intentional in your grip. Do not limp-wrist it. It is a blow-back pistol. It requires a solid hold to push against as there is no swinging or drop link to lock and unlock the chamber. I imagine myself even leaning or pushing forward a little on the gun as I squeeze (not jerk) the trigger. I no longer get brusing in the web of my hand and am much more accurate (partially I am sure because I am no longer flinching anticipating the shock to the hand.)

Hope that helps.

I've only owned mine for a few months, so I don't pretend to be an expert on the P64, but in my limited practice with it I haven't noticed any difficulty with flipping off the safety and cocking the hammer in the act of drawing the weapon before it is aimed on target. Therefore, to me, all the drama about the double action trigger pull seems pointless. I carry it with one in the chamber and safety on without any expectation of ever using it in double action, and it seems to be a fine little pistol.
