Another new owner!

Post by Batteryop124 »

Greeting all, new owner of a 1969 p64! Lurked here a bit while disassemble/reassembling this pistol, great advice and info, thank you all!

Headed to the range today and see just how bad the DA pull really is, (lol) leading me to a question about ammo. Considering this was a military issue, would it be wise to just feed it mil surplus? I have plenty of higher grain rounds for my Russian Mak on hand, just don't want to hurt the new baby...

I know there are prob numerous posts about this, I'm writing before I search the posts.

Again, thank you all for the great info!

Welcome to the forum.

Feed it with whatever works best in it and doesn't destroy your hand, :) Give us a range report.

Range report:

So, the DA pull is like pulling teeth but no worries here. SA is a dream. Accurate beyond my expectations! At 17 yds all fell within 3-3.5" ( working on that, Indian not the arrow! ) Fed 93 gr fmj, about 100 rounds total. BUT....had an occasional problem with not going to battery fully. One stovepipe all day. Ordered the Wolff recoil spring before I left the range, seems to be the culprit unless I find another post that says otherwise. Sights need some bright paint too. Basically repeating what y'all have already stated.
All in all love this pistol! Way more concealable than my Russian Mak, so once the battery problem is fixed it will be my carry.

Thanks again all for the great info on all the posts!

Welcome!
Be sure to feed it a diet of your intended SD ammo before you consider carrying it. 40-50 ( more if you can afford it ) rounds without any issues should be adequate.
There's some good options for grips and grip wraps that may help with the bite. I just put a band-aid on the web of my hand and go shoot and it works fine for me.
Enjoy it, it's a nice little shooter. I was busting Clay's at 25 yds with mine.

Welcome aboard BatteryOp, always glad to have new members. As far as the ammo goes, it should eat whatever you stuff in it. I have yet to find ammo mine will not happily digest. I would NOT recommend the 115 grain Russian ammo that has been found on occasion. While the all steel frame should handle it, although I am not sure about a steady diet of the stuff as the gun was designed for the 93-95 grain weight military ball round, I am not sure about your hand enjoying the added recoil from such a heavy round. For carry I use Hornady Critical Defense but Silver Bear HP will work in a pinch. As far as going into battery, I am going to assume since you talked about disassembling / assembling the pistol that you also thoroughly cleaned it? Dried cosmoline is to be found in any and all nooks crannnies and other small spaces in these little monsters and it can make all kinds of weird stuff happen. If you have not, take it down and take off the grips and soak it for a few hours or even overnight in mineral spirits and then dry, lube and reassemble it and try again. Also might check the breach mouth for peening or other damage, we have had some members with damage in that area caused by the previous owner not reassembling properly and that may cause it.
Anyway, glad to have you and let us know how it goes.
