Leszek Erenfeicht also wrote an article in Athlon tactical life magazine on the P-64.

He wrote,

In total, about 190,000 P-64's were manufactured between 1966 and 1977.During that time, the P-64 underwent several(mostly cosmetic)changes. In 1971,after a string of accidental discharges, the shape and the angle of the safety notch in the hammer were changed. The modified hammer, which still had a rounded spur, was marked with the letter "A" on the left side. When the new hammers became standard in 1972,they were no longer marked. So if your P-64 pistol lacks the "A" marking, don't panic.Just check the manufacturing date on the slide.Chances are it is a model made after 1971,so it has the modified hammer-it's just unmarked. The older ones were meant to be recalled, but some still avoided being modified, mostly those in police warehouses from the earliest production dates(pre 1968).Then, in 1973,another series of cosmetic changes followed and the hammer was reshaped again. This time, though, the new hammer was fitted with a clearly different, angular spur. With this series, the SA notch was reshaped, improving the pistol's functioning overall.
